Today on TBN Jesse Duplantis and Richard Roberts (Oral Roberts son, I think) both had positive things to say about Catholics!
Jesse actually gleemed with joy about being at the Vatican and got to meet the Pope, called him a “gentel” man, if I remember correctly. Richard, actually quoted a Joke about a Catholic School boy, and it was rather funny, then went on to name the Catholic Church among various Christian Churches. Is there a change going on with in Protestantism, and if so, could it be attributed to the passing of John Paul II?

Jesse cracks me up, he’s a funny guy. As far as a Roberts family member, they are all almost as loony as “daddy” Orel is, IMHO. (although they aren’t the worst of the TV preachers… for that, check out Benny Hinn, “Dr.” Mike Murdock, and [everyone’s favorite money-grubbing phony] Robert Tilton.

Peace.

JPII’s first miracle? 🙂

Jesse Duplantis grew up Catholic. As he likes to say, everyone in Louisiana is Catholic at least once. 😉

His family left the Catholic Church when he was a kid, but he’s one of the most Catholic-friendly evangelists you’ll see. He’ll preach in any Catholic church that lets him (and not against catholicism either) and basically doesn’t give a flip if someone is Catholic or any prot denomination as long as they are a Christian.

I remember Jesse saying on one of his broadcasts (paraphrased),

*“You want to see prayer? You watch those Catholics. They’ll slam those kneelers down in a heartbeat. They’ll show you what prayer is!” *

😃

I think a lot of people are seeing how they were wrong in their misconceptions about the Catholic Church. I think Pope John Paul II is the reason for people seeing the Catholic Church in a new light. I believe that sometimes Protestants judge the Catholic Church by looking at it’s members. They see a lot of lukewarm Catholics, which there are, especially in the U.S. But now since the death of Pope John Paul II, they see a member of the Catholic Church which lived his life for Christ and walked in the footsteps of Christ and because of this it has opened people’s eyes to The Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II lived and stood up for and preached The Catholic Faith and never backed dwon from his beliefs. Most Catholic don’t do that. They believe some of the beliefs but then don’t believe in confession or use birth control, etc. for example. But i beleive some of the misconceptions people had about the Catholic Church are starting to be erased and Pope John Paul II has a lot do with it.

AMEN 👍

I haven’t watched or listened to Jesse Duplantis in a long time, but back during my Protestant years I thought he was hilarious. Now I look back and realize that yes, he’s a great entertainer, but he’s also a big proponent of “prosperity doctrine” (a hot topic around here lately). I got tired of hearing him brag about how may Lexuses he owns and how expensive his Citation 10 (private jet) is.

I hope this is a sign of change and ecumenism among the Christian churches. One of my hopes, when I retire and have time, is to give talks to Protestant churches about what Catholics believe. There are many misconceptions!

Love & peace,
Bob

In part. Remember, we’ve had a series of extraordinary events recently:

1 - The Passion of the Christ
This helped explain Catholic reverence for Scripture and exposed millions to Catholic teaching about both Jesus and Mary.

2 - JP II’s death
A world-wide lesson in how to die.

2 - JP II’s funeral
Simply phenominal in its beauty, historical sweep, and cultural impact. The Mass demonstrated worship as reverence. The use of ancient tongues spoke to the ancient roots of the Church. The gathering of the heads of the Catholic churches was deeply moving. The gathering of kings, queens, and presidents acknowledged the importance of the Church and marginalized anti-Catholics.

3 - Election of Benedict XVI
Habemus Papam. A gentle man of keen intellect is thrust into Peter’s chair–a man unafraid to speak of our love and need for Jesus.

4 - Unrelenting Catholic opposition to the Culture of Death
No matter the issue–abortion, gay marriage, euthanasia, Terri Schiavo, embryonic stem cell research, etc.–the Church is there at the ramparts.

As Protestants develop a keener appreciation for the Church, their leaders will follow. 😉

Amen. :yup:

Some televagelists I would NOT want to be on our side. they would give us a bad name. One clown on Sunday started criticizing Methodists for some little interpretation that he did not agree with, I just wanted to gag.

The sad thing about it, was his congregation was eating it up. Some of these folks give Christianity a bad name. Their pitch for the almighty dollar is just scandalous (I know Catholics are asking for big bucks also). The Oral Roberts episode asking for a few million OR God was going to call him home was absolutely ludicrous :whacky: :rotfl:

I think that did more to set back Christianity that the Crusades and Inquisition combined. There ought to be a licensing board to preach Christianity, and these yahoos should have theirs revoked !!!

It’s nice to know that there are more Catholic friendly protestant evangelists out there. However, Jesse Duplantis and others are doing much to promote the Health and Wealth gospel. Health and Wealth gospel is known as “Word of Faith” by its adherents. It is one of the most unbalanced theologies out there. It focuses on the scriptures that promise riches and glory as God’s children. Afterall, we are children of the King. We deserve to live like princes. Word of Faith theology is a horrible mix of religion and blatant consumerism.

One of the more dangerous teachings in the movement concerns speaking. We can ask for ANYTHING we want and if we are faithful we will receive it. Before converting to Catholicism I was a an enthusiastic Word of Faith Christian. If I had a headache, I couldn’t just say “I have a headache.” That would be claiming that headache. According to them one should say they have the SYMPTOMS of a headache. That way we aren’t actually claiming the illness. You get what you speak aka. what you claim. This is one reason many call Word of Faith/Health and Wealth theology “Name it and claim it.”

Even figures of speech can be discouraged. For example, “I’m dying to see you.” would give them the willies.

This trifling with semantics can cause some serious issues in the prayer life. People would ask God for days off from work, and add “but please don’t hurt me.” I actually heard a pastor say that he prayed for days off and a few days later he broke his legs. He said he should have been more specific. They wanted days off, but didn’t want God to make them sick or break a leg. Would God do that??? It is totally contrary to a loving relationship with God. This bothered me because God understands what we mean when we pray. Dictionary English isn’t a requirement for prayer. It treats God like he’s an meddling Greek god just waiting for a chance to mess up our lives if we aren’t specific in our prayers. Ask for food and a 700 pound block of cheese may fall on you. You get what you pray for.

I was very confused by Word of Faith / Health and Wealth theology. Carrying our cross isn’t a goal worthy in and of itself. We carry our cross to get lots of goodies here on earth before we go to the big party in heaven.

Our Lord and Saviour didn’t suffer on the cross so we can drive Lincolns. For them suffering is a temporary means of attaining earthly wealth. It is the religion of modern American Capitalism. Personal piety is a worthy goal. We should love God unconditionally and not for the all the stuff we can get from God’s endless bag of goodies.

:clapping:

It’s true. Catholics are professional pray-ers. While spontaneous prayer is never discouraged, we do seem to have a “prayer for everything”

I always smile when I am at a function that begins with a prayer and the person leading the prayer goes on about how thankful we are for this bright sunny day, and this good food, and being here with all of our friends…don’t get me wrong, those are definitely things to be thankful for…but I always get the impression they just can’t think of anything else to say!! 😃

If you want to see a televangelist becoming Catholic, tune in a Jack Van Impe program. Whenver I come across his program and stop to watch for a bit, he frequently quotes the popes, especially JPII. He speaks about the end times, but mentions specifically that the world will not be destroyed in the end times, citing Scripture and Catholic eschatology, noting that even in our prayers we say “world without end. Amen.” I read a recent article from an evangelical fundamentalist web site asking whether Van Impe was becoming a Catholic.

That’s sad! I’ve always given Billy Graham much more respect for his efforts than Benny Hinn. The former seems to truly love God, while the latter seems to truly love himself.
