The church needs a strong communicator, particularly in the west. Dolan qualifies much better than Turkson in this regard, who, for his part, seems more interested in chasing an economic philosophy that borders on communism.
Pope Benedict, while a wonderful shepherd for the church, is a lesson in “how not to effectively advocate for traditional Catholic principles in the West”. Bland, reading somewhat dryly from a paper in front of him. Not particularly forceful, while greatly admired by theologians…were Benedict a secular speaker, I think he would end a speech with a far smaller audience than he started with.
Dolan to me seems like the kind of person who is forceful enough to keep people listening…almost to shame those who stray from doctrine into repenting. Someone capable of imposing a sense of guilt on those who have fled the church in pursuit of improper secular desires.
But, I admit an American Pope is unlikely right now. The cost of being the global superpower seems to be exclusion from the leadership of…well…anything else.
But, no, not a fan of Turkson becoming the next Pope. I’ll take Ouellet: Multi-lingual, an administrator, experience with the church in the developing world, a Conservative, and yet someone who is used to Western media that the Pope needs to be able to master.
