I’m getting so sick of politicians (and all proabortion Catholics) insisting that Burke is “telling them how to vote.” No, he’s not. He’s clarifying infallible Church teaching (as if they didn’t already know), trying to pull them out of sin, or at least keep them from compounding their sin (by receiving the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin). Vote however you want, just don’t receive the Eucharist until you repent. It’s as simple as that. Notice that he’s not telling nonCatholics not to vote for proabortion laws? That would be violating separation of church and state. He’s simply leading his flock.
Furthermore, if they think the Church is “wrong” about abortion, then why are they still here? Quit causing scandal and become an Episcopalian or ELCA Lutheran. I think a poll should be done to find out how many of these politicians believe in the Real Presence. I’m guessing it’s very low. Therefore, what’s the big deal? As far as they’re concerned, it’s just bread and wine, anyway.
One more thing, (then I’ll stop ranting), I’m also getting sick of this “rape/incest, life/health of the mother” smoke screen. You don’t punish an innocent person (especially w/ death) for the sin of their father. I dare these people to tell anyone whose the product of rape that they shouldn’t have been born. As far as “life/health”, when a woman’s life or health is truly endangered (it’s her actual physical health, not social or economic health), any OB will tell you killing the child is not the only option. You treat both mother and baby until the baby can be delivered safely. I personally haven’t heard of anyone dying in the 1st trimester b/c they didn’t abort (not counting etopics, which aren’t technically abortions). There are always other things you can do.
Ok, off my soapbox
God bless Archbishop Burke. I’m so blessed to be in his archdiocese.
