I have been thinking about the priesthood or joining an order for 4 years now. My Father knows about this (he’s catholic) but my Mother (who is LDS) does not know and I’m very sure would freak out. Please give me your idea on how to tell her. Thank you all relies and thoughts!

I come from a family of fallen away LDS and some very devout LDS as well…it’s never easy since it seems one of the biggest crimes for them is a family who is not all LDS (I’ll spare you the gory details of what happened when I converted…)

Anyway,

the best thing you can really do is explain that it is what you feel God is calling you to. Tell her that you have prayed with an honest and open heart for wisdom and guidance, and God led you to the catholic church, and into the priesthood. By stating it this way, you are kind of using their own words/techniques to make the news easier. One of the LDS common lines for conversion is to tell people to “pray honestly and openly for wisdom, and God will give you understanding.” Of course, they mean towards the LDS church, but I think this may be the best way to explain it.

By the way, kudos on your devotion to our Lord!

Thinking about and actively discerning are two different things, as you and I had previously discussed. You cannot be sure that you are called to the priesthood or to an order until you have gone through a process which helps you discern correctly. The Church needs to help you figure that out.

You may have the cart before the horse with telling your Mom. Discernment is a long process. When you do tell her, you can simply say that you are not sure and that you want to follow God no matter where he calls you. You are not saying that you will be a priest, just that you are going to try to find out for sure. You don’t want to stand before God when you die and have to explain why you didn’t follow him but followed your mother instead.

*Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10:37-38)*And you gotta do what you think God is calling you to do for yourself. You can’t live your life to do what other’s want you to do.

Brother Michael at the Cistercian Monastery of the Holy Spirit here in Geogria told me the story of how the last words his brother spoke to him before he got on the plane to come to the monastery were “It’s like you’re dead!” The Brother replied to his (biological) brother, “Hey, I gotta life my life” and then got on the plane. Brother Michael says that now he goes to visit his family and his brother takes him everywhere to show off his brother the monk.

Make the call… make the appointment… call the priest.
