Is it possible to practice and learn temperance without the state of grace? I know you can call on the saints and such but control over primal urges like food and sex are a must.
The three theological virtues – love, faith, hope – are infused. You cannot acquire them without some form of baptism. If you fall out of the state of grace, you would typically retain faith, and lose love and hope, except for some grave sins against faith.
The other virtues are acquired or infused. They are infused at Baptism. But, absent the state of grace, they can be acquired, partially, by cooperation with actual graces:
wisdom, understanding, knowledge
prudence, fortitude, temperance, justice
However, without the state of grace, the practice of these acquired virtues is difficult, partial, and intermittent.
