When watching some clips from the passion one thing I noticed was that wnen satan tempted Jesus in the desert, and when satan was holding that hideous baby they were presented almost as two different individuals. Why was this?

Also what is with the symbolism and the baby that satan is holding its confusing and I dont understand it?

The second chapter of the first volume of Jesus of Nazareth by Pope Benedict XVI discusses the significance of the temptations that beset Jesus.

That chapter has to be read in the original, and cannot be summarized here.

A temptation is always an urge to set God and God’s word aside and follow our own desires. Just as Adam and Eve were tempted to eat of the forbidden fruit so that they could become like “gods” that is the essence of most of our temptations – to set ourselves up as ‘gods’ and turn away from the real will of God.

One thing about the temptation is that Jesus was tempted by the Devil. This is a part of his humanity. This is how he can say the he was like us in all things. We get hungry, he got hungry. We get tired he got tired. We are tempted to sin, he was tempted to sin.
