The date is set for the new Ten Commandments monument to go up at the Arkansas capitol after the first version was destroyed when a driver plowed into it.

State Sen. Jason Rapert (R), who sponsored the original monument, said that crews will reinstall the Ten Commandments on the statehouse grounds in Little Rock next week. A spokesman for Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin confirmed to Arkansas Online that the installation is set for April 26.

Beautiful.

Chalk one up for the good guys!

Freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and God have prevailed!

The Protestant version most likely. But better than nothing.

Don’t the Catholic and the Protestant versions of the 10 Commandments say pretty much the same thing? I mean, if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it would seem to be those.

Well if you looked at one if the early King James versions, it said “Thou shall commit adultery.” 😉
(I have to wonder how embarrassed the maker of that version was when he realized the mistake. And I gotta wonder how many people went with the printed version.)

There’s a bit more of a difference than ordering. 😉

I wanted to show the differences in ordering even within Protestantism but it’s being moderated because I realised the language in both the Westminster Smaller and Luther’s Small Catechisms have an inappropriate word for donkey. That’s what you get for mindlessly copying and pasting.

Even with just straight up “pulling” from the Internet there’s a difference bigger than ordering. I know because I’m having to relearn them and after 44 years it ain’t easy. 🤣

The Nicene Creed was easier and at some point I had learned the Rosary already (thanks, Daddy!). But to be fair the Methodists use the Nicene and the Apostle’s so I had that covered as a bit of a cheat.

Here’s a recent thread on the same subject. There have been others.

Did The Catholic Church change the 10 Commandments? Apologetics
But the biblical account contains a list of commandments that are not in harmony so the actual tablets are very important.

Thanks, that chart is helpful. I was aware there was an ordering issue with the “covet” ones at the end, but I wasn’t aware of the graven images commandment, probably because the Lutherans and Anglicans don’t use that one and I never bothered to look into it further than that.

Even within Protestantism the ordering is different.
Westminster Shorter Catechism (Presbyterians) (Shorter Catechism: The Orthodox Presbyterian Church):
  • The first commandment is, Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
  • The second commandment is, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
  • The third commandment is, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
  • The fourth commandment is, Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: but the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
  • The fifth commandment is, Honor thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
  • The sixth commandment is, Thou shalt not kill.
  • The seventh commandment is, Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • The eighth commandment is, Thou shalt not steal.
  • The ninth commandment is, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
  • The tenth commandment is, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor’s.
Luther’s Small Catechism (http://bookofconcord.org/smallcatechism.php):
  • The First Commandment. Thou shalt have no other gods.
  • The Second Commandment. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord, thy God, in vain.
  • The Third Commandment. Thou shalt sanctify the holy-day.
  • The Fourth Commandment. Thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother [that it may be well with thee and thou mayest live long upon the earth].
  • The Fifth Commandment. Thou shalt not kill.
  • The Sixth Commandment. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
  • The Seventh Commandment. Thou shalt not steal.
  • The Eighth Commandment. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
  • The Ninth Commandment. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house.
  • The Tenth Commandment. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is his.

I’d like to see a monument with the Ten Commands as described in Exodus 34 😃

“Mommy, why would anyone cook a young goat in its mother’s milk?”

Not in Arkansas. Too many hardcore Fundamentalist Protestants who would protest.

But we can always hope.

i am happy to hear this news, but i always worry about an atheist or satanist lurking somewhere ready to file a lawsuit.
i hope these 10 commandments will stand!
