That’s a very sad story for many reasons. May her soul rest in peace.

“open”.
They mean don’t intervene and get her help.
This is what we’ve come to.
Mercy indeed.
😦

May God lead each of us to a place in our hearts where we can follow His will for our lives. God grant us the strength to respect life from the beginning to the end,

Why couldn’t she wait until God chose the time of her death? If the pain got too unbearable, it could have been controlled with strong drugs…but to commit suicide is throwing eternity away after the big party!
Hopefully, the Lord will be extra merciful to her.

You slowly loose all use of your body until finally it affects you lunges and you can’t breathe anymore and you then choke to death.

I am a hospice volunteer I have seen it.

I don’t know what I would do I hope I never get ALS - horrible death sentence.

I pray for her and her family.

There is a lot of anger in many people’s choice to end their life in a public manner. My husband’s sister was recently diagnosed with ALS. The disease has hardened her even more than before. She has not spoken to her daughter, since the girl was 15, 25 years ago. She has not spoken to one of her two sons for five years. When he reached out to her after finding out about her illness, she refused to speak with him.

She has made plans to go to Switzerland, next year, before she needs any kind of invasive help, such as diaper changes. She has asked the one son she is still speaking to, to accompany her. I can’t think of anything worse a parent can do to a child, than asking the child to put the parent “to sleep”. My husband, though he doesn’t agree with her decision, said he would accompany her to spare his nephew this experience. She said no, she wants her son with her.

I’ve had to euthanize three dogs, and the experiences were awful and very painful. In contrast, I was with each of my parents when they died natural deaths in old age, helped by pain killers. Their deaths were comforting experiences. I can’t understand this need to make one’s suicide a public affair. I feel sorry for the children.

Honestly, I don’t know if I would have the courage to do that. Wait for God’s appointed time to die, especially if you know you will suffer greatly in the meantime. Sort of like Jesus Agony in the Garden.

It is the prospect you are slowly suffocating to death since you do not have the ability to breathe for yourself anymore is what really bothers me. To be stuck in a non-functioning body is hell.

Yes.

I agree that choking is horrible. Although she is committing suicide, maybe this part of the catechism (about suicide) ‘‘Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.’’ can make it possible for her to not end up in hell. THAT IS, if she has no other unconfessed serious sin(s). She could therefore escape hell for the sin of suicide but still go to hell for another (other) sin(s). Thing is, provided she’s Catholic, she can’t make a good confession and receive absolution knowing she’s about to commit a very serious, potentially mortal sin. She’s in a very undesirable position spiritually and otherwise.

Hopefully she wasn’t Catholic then. As to what transpired, I pray for her. ALS is a terrible disease, as is the death it offers people. I will not judge her for choosing to lessen her agony and I hope God doesn’t judge her too harshly either.

I pray God has mercy on her soul. I can’t imagine the agony she would have faced had the disease run its course. It’s the most hideous death of all. :crying:

But suicide is a mortal sin for Catholics. 🤷

According to the article, she doesn’t mention God at all …so I suspect she doesn’t believe in an afterlife.

I hate to say it, but life would be easier all around if there was no God. There would be very few restrictions…you would only worry about getting caught by the law for stealing, murder and lying under oath.
No worries about sexual sins, cursing, or keeping the Sabbath holy. By being accountable to God makes life a lot harder!
