Terrible distortions introduced by "hippie culture"

Then likewise by that logic hippies cannot be held responsible for what is done today!
Right.
They cannot be held responsible for any given sin today, but they can be held responsible for making it part of mainstream society.

You cannot hold them responsible for what is at the bottom of the staircase, but they are responsible for pushing us down it.

They could not make anything part of the mainstream unless the mainstream wanted to partake of it.

They cannot push us anywhere we do not want to go.

If you look back throughout history you will see “hippie” times over and over. They never introduced anything that had not been introduced before.

Scripture tells us that evil gets more evil as the day approaches. The evil one roams the earth seeking whom he may devour. They were deceived just as any one of us are.

Hate the sin - love the hippie!

The inventors of artificial birth control did introduce something that had never existed before - the ability to separate sex from procreation. Then the courts made the Pill legal, and all bets were off. Lust had license, like a Pandora’s box of evils, out poured all manner of perversions which still haunt us today, only quadrupled.

Some of that generation is now in power - do you appreciate their deconstruction of everything that our nation has ever stood for? It’s what they have always done, it’s what they believe in, they distort history to justify their agenda and they just keep tearing down moral values and righteousness until they take their dying breaths.

Which cannot come too soon, IMO.

I find it difficult to see the person bringing and popularizing a sin to be just another victim of the sin.
I see them as active participants in the sin.
Perhaps even a component of it, for without the hippie the sin would not be what it is now.

I can love the man, but seperate from the sin.

But I cannot see a hippie seperate from the sin.
Seperate the hippie from the sin and you end up with just a man…not a hippie.

Just like the Pharisees. They would not associate with publicans or harlots or tax collectors or any sinner. Any sinner is labeled by his sin whether it be murderer or adulterer or anything else. Jesus looked past labels to the man.

If we reach out in love perhaps the man will give up the sin.

There were those that did during that time, giving them food, shelter, medical help when no one else would. The lifestyle led to problems but there were those that saw the problems and helped without judgement.

Because of kindness some sinners could hear the conviction of the Holy Spirit. War is hell, thank God there are medics who fix the wounded regardless of whose right or wrong.

Man is not the enemy - the evil one is for he blinds the minds. There will come judgement for actively participating in sin and not repenting but we are not to rush to judgement but let God judge.

The Hippie Movement was an attack on American, and Western Culture in general. They had their uniforms, long hair and code of conduct. Sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. If the problem is not properly defined, how will we prepare for the new version being planned? The devil affects each of us individually, but when you join others in approving collective sin, what are you doing? If your group demands that no authority be trusted, that no marriage is needed, that smoking dope is OK - and encouraging the “straights” you meet to do the same - you are preaching a Godless, hedonistic lifestyle and living in open scandal as a bad example to those around you.

There is no “rush to judgement.” They rejected the current social order openly and lived out their own beliefs, while inviting others to join in. Yes, only God can judge each one of them, but if we say nothing then only vagueness prevails. We must know what is right and what is wrong and be able to convincingly pass the truth on to others.

We do not just need to mend minds and bodies but direct people to salvation. What did Jesus say to the woman who was about to be legally stoned to death after he forgave her? Go and sin no more.

Peace,
Ed

I am confused.

On the one hand, it would appear the label is something you want to hold onto.
And on the other you wish to dispense with the label.

Which is it?
Using labels to define a person misses the totality of a person and is prejudice.

Labels mean different things to different people and can confuse the discussion causing problems.

I could not agree with you more on the last paragraph. The one thing I would add is that Jesus first defended her, asking the crowd ‘who is without sin?’

That defense is missing on this thread and that is why I posted a defense.

You are completely correct in saying that we should not be vague about sin. However, the Pharisees were not vague, yet, Jesus rebuked them. It is not only standing for morality but not putting up walls.

We need that love that Jesus displayed for the sinner. It breaks down walls so the sinner can see their sin.

Why are church populations decreasing but street ministries overflowing? It has to do with love. Not everyone responds but if we remove our prejudice, they have a better chance.

I don’t know if you have ever been disliked because of what you are and not who you are but you can feel that prejudice. It is hard not to be prejudice but it is impossible not to be prejudice if we deny it.

Any movement is defined by a small, radical group of people. Others join because they agree with some of the agenda but not necessarily all of the agenda. That is the danger of assuming you know who a hippie is, even though you may know what a hippie is or at least what a hippie means to you.

The actual hippie experiment in the Haight area really lasted only for one summer because it could not sustain the radical lifestyle. The radical agenda goes beyond the label. Perhaps it is better to say the sin of the hippie culture because there was good in the culture.

Christianity could not last without the Holy Spirit because of human frailty. That is why I said hate the sin - love the hippie.

There is no prejudging when someone is standing right in front of you and approving someone else’s sin.

Your “any movement” analogy is not true. The anti-abortion movement is facing a lot of hurdles because other groups and the media keep telling them they have no right to protest legal abortion.

I saw the Hippie movement in Detroit. It was not limited to Haight-Ashbury. I went to the local Head Shop selling roach clips, The Fifth Estate, Ann Arbor Sun and perverted comix. The idea was carved in stone. Just pick up a copy of National Lampoon from the period. “Feds and Heads” was a game featured in one issue. And let’s not forget Cheech and Chong, those lovable dope pushers. For those who don’t know Cheech and Chong, just think Jay and Silent Bob minus the overt sexuality.

Your Church populations and street ministries analogy needs documentation. One street ministry I know of in Detroit is unable to pay their bills. The Catholic Church is gaining members around the world.

My Hippie friend, raised like I was, appeared like he had walked straight out of Hippie Boot Camp. He had it all down and accurate. His younger brother would join him later. There was nothing vague about what they were about. Like I wrote earlier, those I saw practiced Ultra-Orthodox behavior.

Peace,
Ed

And there is also no prejudging at this time.

We have the history of the movement. We have their actions and their words.
And we now have the fruits of their work.

From the evidence, it does not look good for the hippie.
