As TerryPaul’s thread began to get a little lengthy, I want to start a 2nd part to that topic. I believe he has asked some very logical questions about the LXX and the canon. He asks some questions that resemble many of my thoughts when I was a Protestant minister. I remember being one who seeked Truth and was a passionate defender of it to the extent of what I knew about it, and thank God He opened my heart to accept the fullness of the Faith. I remember my faith without Church authority. I believed the Bible was the Word of God, but as I studied all these writings that were not in my Protestant Bible, I found alot that were very edifying, and written by high calibar men such as St. Clement of Rome who is mentioned in the Bible in Phil. 4:3. St. Barnabas who is mentioned in the Bible. And Hermas who is mentioned in Romans 16:11. As TerryPaul mentioned Jude quotes the Assumption of Moses and the book of Enoch. These are some of many that I wondered why they were not considered inspired. At the time I was a Baptist I read the deuterocanonicals and saw no reason why they should not be left out. I studied the Dead Sea Scrolls for years and was very edified by some of the non-biblical scrolls. As I am a Greek translator, and I do translate Scripture, I run into variant readings of Scripture from even LXX manuscripts. Some where along the way there has to be Apostolic authority, and that is where the Church that is lead by the Holy Spirit makes infallible decisions with the infallible Word. Thank God it is not left up to me!
My point is this. To refer to his question to why some LXX books are not in our Catholic canon is because of Church authority. When I accepted that by faith it was like a million pound weight lifted off me. I finally got rid of the job of being my own Pope!
The Pope and the Bibshops are the successors of the Apostles, and they are the ones who for 2000 years have had the authority given by Christ to decide these things. They are the ones who have the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven!
