With today as Memorial Day, I wanted to honor all veterans, esp. my own father. He was a Combat Engineer in WWII whose unit received a Presidential Citation and he was a Bronze Star recipient, taking part in the Battle of the Bulge and holding the bridge at Remagen. He never said a word about the war until he was in his late 70’s. I thank him and all veterans for their service and sacrifice. May God bless them.

Well, Veterans Day is actually the day for honoring living veterans. Today is the day for remembering all of those that died for our freedom. I know it will sound picky to some, but it is only that the meaning of today has become lost in retail sales, the first barbecue of the season, and erroneously thinking today is the day we thank veterans.

This fact was taught to me by my father, a POW during WWII, and reinforced by both my husband and son who both served in the military. It is the wish of those that have served that we use today to honor those that died while in the service of their country.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

So sorry to offend you. As the daughter of a WWII honored veteran and a participant in MANY official ceremonies such as Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day I know what this day is for. I simply chose to honor my deceased father today as I do on every patriotic “holiday”. Please ignore the original post if it offends you.
