I just have to chuckle at how many times people have directly reffered to or elluded to thanksgiving being some sort of liturgical feast, or even on par with a solemnity… 🙂

It is a non-obligatory national feast. It has full propers for both the Roman and Ruthenian Churches, and I understand also the Ukrainian Church also does.

Certainly, it’s one of the more popular ones at my home parish… the bishop usually abates the fast for both thursday and friday. (Thursday isn’t obligatory fast, but Byzantine Rite Catholics are already in Advent…) But the announcement is almost always made only at liturgy on thursday morning.

👍

👍 Modernist secularization of America and western Europe within the past 40 years has pushed more of an “anti-religious attitude”. We see it more during the Christmas seasons and has been escalating.

Why only 25 percent of American Catholics and only 5-12 percent of European Catholics attend Mass? Because of “worldly” humanist, secularist, liberalist, agnostic and atheist ideologues.

I too am just as “guilty” of putting God on a “Sunday day planner”. Mass, food shopping etc. We all have to as St. Paul said, “we must renew our minds”.

It is a challenge for us more today to live and defend our faith than 40 years ago. We even see it at Sunday Mass of “modernist, secularist” attitudes of people.

I have actually heard from people they love Father________ because of his 20-30 minute Mass from certain parishes. Pretty much what their faith is only the “speed Mass”, race out of the parking lot, and go about their “worldy” ways until the next Sunday. For many what did they get from Mass? Nothing, because of their “worldiness " sinfullness. By the way why are the Confession lines so small? Sorry, I attend confession at least once a month and constantly see the"small line” to Confessional and “huge lines” to receive Holy Communion.

We live in the world. we are called not to be of the world. “World” as Jesus said, is not the physical Earth we live on, but thoughts and actions that are contrary to God.

I once attended a Byzantine Rite Mass. I twice attended Tridentine Latin Rite Masses. By these experiences I have place more emphasis of faith, reverence, piety toward the Ordinary Form Mass which most of Latin rite Catholics attend today.

Research on Father Anabelle Bugnini and you will understand why Pope Benedict XVI has put in the Third Edition of the Roman Missal which we will experience on Sunday November 27 2011.
The fastest Mass I attended was in Mumbai: 15 minutes. The priest prayed at the speed of light. Instead of coming down the stairs one by one to give communion, he jumped the 4 stairs down to save time…What a performancde !

In defense of the OP, they said they didn’t mind that Mass was longer, they were just surprised and wondered if this was common or not.
I did not intend to attack the OP, I said. No intention to give the least attack.
I said it is a sign of times.
We are always in a hurry and anything that hinders the program maeks us nervous.
Have you seen “Modern Times” of Charlie Chaplin?
I cannot stop seeing it old as it is…

It’s technically an optional memorial. This year, however, it is an obligatory memorial, that of Saint Andrew Dũng–Lạc, priest, martyr, and companions.

What kind of community is it? Mostly retired? We have two daily masses. The 7AM is very quick since many commuters have to catch the train into the city and if they miss it they would be late for work. We have a 9 which is a bit longer but also there are a number of working people that attend and we have a very busy community. In all actuality without music and with only about 85-90 people in attendance I don’t see how it can go for more than a 1/2 hour unless the homily is very long. I remember in the old days of the pre-Vatican II masses, daily mass was usually 20 minutes. Also daily masses don’t go long since often there may be a funeral following the mass.
We’re in a suburban area near a population of rice farmers and ranchers. Mass is at 8:30, homilies are longer and very edifying. Father takes his time with the consecration.

People who work at NASA, which is nearby, can attend a very short noon hour Mass over lunch. People who work in downtown Houston have several morning, noon, or 5pm Masses that are also shorter.
