The 3 Humilities of JESUS

First JESUS humbled HIMSELF to become “flesh”, to wrap HIMSELF within HIS creation - “us” - to come to us, teach us and save us. The distance and gap between GOD and man is so beyond our ability to measure or know or understand how this act so “lowered” JESUS from HIS Kingdom to HIS creation. This knowledge is one of the gifts of salvation - to truly realize how much JESUS loves us.

Secondly, JESUS humbled HIMSELF to place HIS Kingship, authority and power beneath HIS Mother Mary and Step Father Joseph for a time. Quite living and existing within a family unit and with all the Power and Majesty of GOD, but being directed and following the requests and instructions of Mary and Joseph.

Thirdly, in transitioning the Passover Celebration - HIS saving of the Jewish Nation - into HIS saving of mankind - HE lowered HIMSELF even further to wrap HIMSELF with, into and becoming unleavened bread - the bread HE directed to be eaten by the Jewish Nation at the first Passover now became JESUS at HIS last Passover leading into HIS passion. And is the bread we eat today “in remembrance of HIM”.

Three times JESUS lowered HIMSELF for our benefit and our salvation, each time lower than the last, but with each increase in humility HE “moved us” closer and closer to HIM in salvation. HE surrendered HIMSELF in humility that we might live with HIM in the Majesty of HIS Kingdom.

Who can model this humility that JESUS gives us? What saint has ever matched this humility?

CCC Paragraph 526 “To become a child in relation to GOD is the condition for entering the Kingdom. For this we must humble ourselves and become little…”

Children model this humility. Innocent and weak and fully relying upon “Mothers and Fathers” for their care direction and safety. Knowing they don’t know, and trusting that “Mother and Father” will make all things o.k. without the children having to worry about it. And St Therese of the Little Child in “her way” of simplicity and growing Holy by answering the door or washing the floor.

How difficult it is for “us” to surrender ourselves and lower ourselves and become humble. As satan fell with the sin of pride, he has ever since been driven to keep “us” proud so that we lose sight of and never even consider embracing humility.

Meditate on humility and wonder in awe on how low JESUS humbled HIMSELF to save you. What was the last “humble” act you embraced?

I believe you are correct as JESUS said HE could call forth 12 legions of angels “if” HIS Kingdom was of this world, but instead humbly did not exercise HIS authority. And in thinking about your question, it dawned upon me that HIS agony in the garden where HE called to GOD HIS FATHER and asked “that this cup would pass from ME, but not MY will, but YOUR will be done” - paraphrase. To accept that the will of HIS FATHER was for JESUS to continue in HIS passion to death, and with blood dripping from HIS body, HE humbly accepted the will of HIS FATHER.

Thanks Julian. I was just thinking about the Lord’s prayer, how he taught the apostles to pray, that it is steeped in humility, every bit of it. I’m beginning to wonder if the point of all prayer is humility, and the point of all humility is to follow Jesus more closely.

I suppose that’s a ‘duh’. But in this age of anti-Catholic attacks, it is almost too easy to respond in other, perhaps less pious, ways.
