At the end of the first movie, Qwen Stacey’s father is at the verge of death. Just minutes before this, he discovered that Spiderman is Peter Parker(Gwen’s boyfriend). With his last few breaths Gwen’s father asks Peter to promise that he will break up with Gwen so that she is not a target of Spiderman’s enemies. At the end of the movie Peter holds up his promise and breaks up with Gwen. At the beginning the audience discovers that Peter and Gwen are back together. To make a complicated thing simple, throughout the entire movie Peter and Gwen break-up and get back together multiple times. Peter is suffering a great conflict within himself. He knows that he made a promise to Gwen’s father, but he also has in some way made a commitment to Gwen that he would be with her. At the very end of the movie, Peter fights his friend Harry Osbourne, who has now become the Green Goblin. During this fight, Gwen is hanging by one of Spiderman’s webs below Peter and the Goblin. One of the gears is going to sever the web, so Peter does his best to stop the gears from moving while he also fends off the Green Goblin. Peter’s attempt to stop the gear from severing the web fails and causes the whole gear system to explode. This leads to Gwen falling to her demise. The main issue of Gwen and Peter’s relationship is the fear of death. It is not wrong to want the communion that you share with a person to remain a constant thing in life, but as Christians we must remember that we will have to suffer death before we see the Resurrection. With that in mind, I would like to argue that it would be better for a couple like Peter and Gwen to be together if they are also actively working towards the salvation of the other person. They would have nothing to fear because even if one of them dies they will still be together in the Resurrection and also share a communion as members of the Church.
“With great power comes great responsibility”
I love this quote from Spiderman, especially when it is said within the context of our mission to preach the Gospel. When we come to know the truth of the Gospel, we are also called to share it. The more we come to know Jesus, the more inclined we should be to share it with others. We have an OBLIGATION to share the truths that are communicated to us. We have a responsibility to share the Love that God has given us with others. I also think this quote acts as a good reminder that our actions have ETERNAL consequences. God before ever taking the form of man in Jesus Christ was humble because he created us with free-will, which allows us to affect all of human history. We must use our actions for good things because if we do not their consequences will lead to more evil than good. We must be sure to discern that actions are good by discerning the will of God. He gave us free will so that we could freely choose to surrender to His will and Love.
