The Annunciation - Solemnity - Treat it like Lent or celebrate?

I think I already know the answer to this question but I’ll ask anyway. Today is the Solemnity of the Annunciation - do we carry on with our regular Lenten fasts and penances or do we suspend those for the day to celebrate this great day in the Church?

Sunday is a solemnity. How do you live your Sundays during Lent? I’d live the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord the same way I lived my Sundays during Lent - fully celebrating, but doing any penances I so desired.

March 19 was the solemnity of St. Joseph but a priest who is familiar with the Code of Canon Law told me we still were still obligated to abstain from meat unless we got a dispensation from our Pastor. So you see, even solemnities can have a certain degree of penance done in them, most especially when they take place during Lent.

And here I enjoyed a hamburger on the solemnity of St. Joseph. Here are the two threads I went by (with Canon 1251 being cited).

since what you are doing is voluntary, do what you have been doing on Sundays of Lent.

this day marks when it all began, Jesus coming into the world to fulfill his saving mission. what appropriate timing. Mother Church is a genius

The Pastor? I had thought you needed a bishop to dispense from abstinence. And didn’t the USCCB issue a dispensation to this effect?

The priest I speak of said we needed to get a dispensation from our Pastor if we wanted to eat meat.

If the Bishops issued a dispensation then I would imagine one needed a dispensation to eat meat on the solemnety of St. Joseph. The question I have is did the bishopes do this? and was a dispensation needed or could one eat meat simply because the Church teaches that solemnities on Fridays during Lent override our obligation to abstain from meat on that day?

I’d appreciate it if someone knew the answers to my questions.

I’m glad I found this thread. Fr. Serpa’s response is good enough for me!

St. Joseph’s Day is a big Italian feast day with my gang, but everyone was happy to keep the fast with a big plate of angel hair with olive oil, garlic, and red pepper, and fruit for dessert.😃

Today, however, is the solemnity of the Annunciation. In addition to the beauty of the day, our cathedral is celebrating the Chrism Mass this early evening, and, it’s my feast day! :extrahappy:

We’ll be leaving for mass soon. We’ll be met by several of our (grown and young) godchildren, and a dear friend whom I pray will come into the Church.

Then, darlings, we’re gonna CELEBRATE!!

I also thought that feast days in Lent (including Sundays) were part of Lent and observed as such. Since then I have found out that feast days and Sundays are celebrated.

I just got off the phone with a CAF apologist who said that the Code of Canon Law dispenses us from having to abstain from meat on solemnities that take place on Friday’s during Lent. He said because the Code of Canon Law itself dispenses us we don’t need a dispensation from Bishops or Pastors.
