The Beginning of the End - Does Anyone Know of a Parish That Will Begin Using the New Translation for the Sung Mass Parts Next Weekend?

Our parish is using the new Gloria this weekend. We will start the new Sanctus in early Octiober and the Agnus Dei in mid October.

That’s not correct. The USCCB set the date for implementation for the new translation (November 27), and subsequently conceded to individual bishops the authority to allow use of the sung portions earlier. But a bishop could not simply decide to implement the whole thing tomorrow.

Not true. The local Synod has no Canonical authority once the the Missal recieved the necessary 2/3 vote and Vatican recognitio. Thus they cannot concede any authority to the bishop.

No, not at all. Those powers rest squarely with the Congregation; see, inter alia, paragraphs 15, 71, and 104 ("t still belongs to the competent Conference of Bishops to approve their assumption into liturgical use within the boundaries of a given ecclesiastical territory") of Liturgiam Authenticam. This is, ultimately, part of the fallout of § 36(4) of Sacrosanctum Concilium, which gave to the conferences, and not individual bishops, the responsibility for approval and oversight of liturgical translations. Obviously, the bishops themselves are well aware of this, which is why many of them petitioned the Conference for permission to implement the musical settings early, as was approved on June 16.

Tonight at Mass the congregation was told that the implimentation for the New English Translation of the Roman Missile is set for the first week of Advent (November 27th).

However, our Parish is starting now, introducing the new parts slowly (tonight we learned the new Alleluia that is sung before and after the Gospel). Next week, we’ll be taught another new part, and so on.

While all I’ve heard from my neck of the woods is crickets and silence on early implementation of the sung Mass parts, up yonder from me, the Archdiocese of San Antonio will commence its gradual implementation this coming weekend.

Yeah…I heard them loud and clear, too. Our parish priest gave us the “hand wave”…the same one he uses to avoid discussions…

Is that the one by David Hoffman? If it is, I would not recommend it. His setting for the Gloria is responsorial. The Gloria was never meant to be responsorial; it is supposed to be straight-through. Thankfully, we are going to go with the ICEL chatn settings. They are easy and do not feautre excessive musical interludes. Richard Proulx’s A Community Mass is also a good, revised option.

David Kauffman’s Mass of Renewal DOES have a through-composed Gloria. We’re going to start working on it (soon, I hope). I wish we COULD do some chant, but, again, :dts:

I was in St. Louis this weekend, and the parish that I attended did the new Marty Haugen “Creation Mass” parts. I actually liked them better than the old Creation parts. It was a bit of a stumble, even with the missallettes in hand. But not anything worth complaining about.
