I went to my first Latin Mass.

It was a sung Novus Ordo, by the Oratorians of St Philip Neri. Everything except the readings, Gospel, and homily were in Latin. Music was either chant or polyphony. The readings and Gospel were chanted!

I felt like a little kid going to my pre-First Communion Masses, trying to learn what was going on. Even the familiar was new. There was an Adoremus hymnal/missal there – Latin on the left, English on the right – so a bit of scanning back and forth; but the responses were in chant notation  instead of the “regular” musical notation. There was bowing during the Creed – never did that before – and no sign of peace. There was lots of censing, the priests faced the altar, and bells! bells! bells!

The only place I got lost was the Eucharistic Prayer – I didn’t know which one they used – Father told me afterward they use EU I, the Roman Canon, exclusively. They also hand out a “cheat sheet” before Mass with all the responses for that Mass that aren’t in Adoremus.

OK, I don’t know what else to say, I’m kind of rambling here…

I don’t know how to describe it, except…

OMG!!:extrahappy:

I’m not sure what you mean by “it was sung Novus Ordo”, but I know exactly how you feel. My first Traditional Latin Mass was a beautiful experience because the silence of the Mass allows for prayer. I don’t get too hung up on knowing where the priest is at any exact moment, I simply read quietly in prayer the prayers of the day’s Mass out of the 1962 missal.

My first Latin Mass was back in August and I have been to only one novus ordo Mass since. There just seems to be a much more reverent atmosphere at the Latin Mass… and I didn’t see one pair of flip flops or belly shirts.

😃

I guess he went to an Ordinary Form Mass which was celebrated exclusively in Latin instead of the vernacular.

Eucharistic Prayer I was the canon of the Mass when I was a kid. I would suggest that y’all hold off on this topic until tommorow? In case you hadn’t noted, there is a ban on discussing things that could possibly lapse over into Traditional Catholicsim. This has the potential.

That’s right… What’s up with the that (or any other) forum being closed anyway? Was there a technical problem?

I’ve posted here for over four years. I listen to the mods particularly the admin mods. The forum should be re-opened tomorrow. In case you hadn’t noticed, discussing moderator actions is a banned topic. Things go so much smoother when you read:

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=116150

forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=270175

In this case it is:

forums.catholic-questions.org/announcement.php?f=102&a=91

I am a TC. That is what I grew up with…It’s not technical, it’s attitudinal and there are problems. My best advice it to heed the moderator. A word to the wise…

Sorry, I wasn’t thinking. I am aware of the temp ban…wasn’t my intent to break it, just happened to be able to go today (wasn’t scheduled for work today, and it’s a long haul via public transit).

Sooo, folks, let’s avoid this until Armistice Day!

Moderator, please close this ill-advised thread.

Well, I enjoyed your post. I don’t see how in the world a description of a reverent EF Mass is breaking rules in any way, shape, or form.

The clergy of that parish should be commended 👍

It sounds to me like a celebration STRICTLY according to the Missal of Paul VI and the directions of Vatican II.

Just to clarify, everyone. Discussion of the OF Mass, Latin or Vernacular, is proper discussion for the L&S forum. Please refrain from discussing/comparing it to the EF Mass, though. Thank you all.
