The Bible Code...

Hi,

How bad is it to take interest in things like “The Bible Code”? I ask because today when my dad was on the computer, he noticed a shortcut to a program called “Unlocking The Bible Code.”

When he saw what it was, he became a little worried and upset and asked me who downloaded the program and who uses it. I knew it was my brother’s, since he had asked our grandparents for it for his birthday…I didn’t tell him that though, since I’m tired of being caught in the middle of these types interrogations and being blamed by both sides…blamed and harassed by my brother for ratting him out, and/or blamed by my dad for not saying anything sooner. So I just told him “I don’t know, try talking to him about it and asking him.” Then I assured him again it wasn’t my program, and in fact I was trying to grow deeper in my Catholic faith by learning more about it and coming to places like these.

I didn’t really think much of this Bible Code thing at first anyway, but I would like to know just how spiritually unhealthy this kind of thing is. I wouldn’t want my older brother to get a warped faith or anything.
 
I think it is more silly and a waste of time, than sinful.

It could only become a problem if your brother or whoever starts taking it the least bit seriously and it starts impacting his faith in orthodox Catholic teaching.
 
tonite in the history channel there were having a program about the existence of bibles codes in the torah. a lot of jewish scholars belief that they exist an that most of those codes had predict events that has happen an some that could happen in the future. is there any one that knows about this, what the catholic church knows about it. thank you. god bless
 
I am adamantly against the “Bible Code”. It is nothing more than a “religious” horoscope in my opinion. So, we don’t understand everything in the Bible? No problem! What is in the Bible code? It will warn us of what is to come! NO GOOD, NO WAY!!! It can easily supplant the Catholic Faith and even the Bible!!!

There is a growing interest in the Bible Code among certain groups of Protestants, particularily of certain groups of Pentecostals and evangelicals. This kind of smacks of gnosticism to me as far as “secret knowledge only to a few” goes. Stay away from it, and yeah, it’s even worth ratting out your brother for, but I’d find out all I can about it and talk with him about it first. This stuff is just as bad as the occult as far as I am concerned because it sets itself up as an authority over and against the Church, or at least I believe it easily can for someone not well grounded in their faith. I know because I come from that kind of Pentecostal background and my father still lends much credence to this sort of nonsense. I am currently the only Catholic in my family although I hope this changes soon. God bless, and pray. - Mfaustina1

ps. You’ll also find Jewish proponents of the Kaballah, but you wouldn’t believe in the veracity of that in light of proper Judaism, would you? Just a thought. 😉
 
I read the book before I had heard anything about it. It belonged to a friend and I read it on a long trip and in the “observatory”. It was and is total balony. Scientifically, you can find “hidden words” in any book of any substantial length. It is called random sequencing and is easily explained in books about ciphers, military codebreaking or number theory. If you decipher Alice in Wonderland long enough you will see the phrases " Panthers win Superbowl" and “Chris wins lottery”.

I actually enjoyed the books about codebreaking and ciphers. It teaches the difference between real and phony codes. Your brother might enjoy them also.

Yeah, I think you’re right…today my brother didn’t go to Mass when he was supposed to. When my mom called him up and asked him why, he was saying something about the Catholic Church being corrupt and stuff like that…plus, I’m finding all of these shortcuts on this computer to stuff like “Gnosis christianity matrix”, whatever that means. I guess he’s falling away from Catholicism. 😦
 
Apparently you can find just about any combination of words in a text of sufficient lenghth. This was found in the Bible Code:

“The Bible Code is a silly, dumb, fake, false, evil, nasty, dismal fraud and snake-oil hoax.”

Oh no!! I just found this coded into an obscure part of Habakkuk! It reads " Max…his homework…is not done"
I think this was right after the part about Elvis and a grill cheese sandwich.
