Do non-Catholics realize who in fact gave them their Bibles? It was the Catholic church who guarded it for 2,000 years and anyone who tried to change it would be ex-communicated. We owe our debts to the monks. It is the Roman church under God that we owe the posession of the Bible in its integrity at the present day. It was in the monasteries that multitudes of copies of the Holy Scriptures were made. Moreover the Sacred Scriptures were a favorite subject of study among the clergy; and a popular occupation was the writing of commentaries upon them, as all priests at least are aware, from having to recite portions of them every day, ranging from the age of St. Leo the Great and St. Gregory, down to Saint Bernard and St Anslem.
