I have finished reading the book Angels and Demons, and I must say, it was great. However, I researched into the statements made in the book. One statement especially attracted my attention.

It was a statement claiming that the Catholic Church had devised the Big Bang Theory (although it wasn’t called that at the time of its construction). I looked up the person “Georges Lemaitre” on an online encyclopedia, and it does in fact say that he devised the theory.

So my question is this: did the Catholic Church back up the theory, and do they still do?

The Church doesn’t back any scientific theory one way or another. That’s not its function. It only states if a theory is incompatible with the Catholic faith or not which the Big Bang theory certainly is not.

Angels and Demons is a horrid book btw.

One of the pioneering scientists on the “Big Bang” theory was a Catholic Priest. There were/are many priests with Ph.D.'s that are scientists and educators at Universities. There have been many that have contributed to their areas of science with discoveries and theories.

The Big Bang theory has been backed up with tons of data from many different scientists of many different religious backgrounds. Try going to any physics web site and doing a search on “big bang”.

I have not read this book you are talking about. What point were they trying to make with this??
 
Promoting a particular scienific theory is not the function of the magisterium of the Catholic Church, although individual Catholics, especially professional scientists, on their own initiative and evaluating it on the basis of strictly empirical/experimental evidence on hand, may or may not support the said theory.

In other words, the views of individual Catholics concerning it do not necessarily reflect the view of, or bind the Church to it.

Some years ago, I assisted at some conferences at l’Université de Montréal by Hubert Reeves. Doctor Reeves is an astrophysician who has written many books on the origin and development of the universe.

I remember him saying that science can know the state of the world within a millionth of a second of the Big Bang, but beyond the Big Bank, science has to be silent. This, he said, is a question for philosophy and theology.

As said above, the Church as church holds no scientific opinion. It only tells us that God is the Ultimate Cause of everything that exists and that he had a purpose in creating the world.

Ditto on what others have said about the book, Angels and Demons or it’s evil twin by the same writer, The Duh Vinci Code. It in no way should either be used as a factual reference for anything.

The DVC has been roundly debunked in many books and articles. What can be said about that waste of ink, can be said about A&D.

A Catholic priest helped devise the Big Bang Theory, and it has never been condemned by the Church. As others have said, however, the Church doesn’t go around promoting scientific theories of any kind.

That being said, the Big Bang Theory is an interesting point of science because it’s one of the most soundly demonstrated theories, consistantly explaining new observations with little modification, and it’s also the single most theistic sound scientific theory. As Verbum said, science can fairly reliably say what happened up to just a fraction of a second after the Big Bang, but we simply can’t touch the moment itself or what came before it. Beyond that, there is simply no solid explaination of how a universal singularity, a single point that contains all time and energy in existance, could spontaneously explode without some outside force put in; it defies reason. The Big Bang Theory doesn’t “prove” the Catholic conception of God, but it does provide a very strong scientific support for the idea that “something” outside of what we understand as the universe came along and flicked the Cosmic Singularity.
 
I’ve always thought that when God said, “Let there be light”, that’s when the Big Bang happened.
 
Angels and Demons was a good read (for the sake of reading and nothing else), I have to admit. But I said it was good because it got me to search things on the WWW (like the Big Bang theory). Thanks for all your help.
