So I started on the pill when I was 18 years old. I’m now 26. Just a little over a month ago I threw the pills away because I didn’t want to take them anymore. I gained 80 lbs in the last several years taking the stupid things, plus I wanted to remain true to my faith and begin Natural Family planning.

Only thing is that my period hasn’t come yet. I took an ovulation test and it said that it would start in 24-36 hours and it’s way past that time frame.

Was just wondering if anyone else out there had this happen to them? Is it normal for your period to be late the first time you have it after going off the pill?

Any help/insight/suggestions etc, would be greatly apprechiated. Thanks.

I did the same thing. But when I started on the pill around 20ish, it was because my body wasn’t acting right in the first place. I couldn’t miss so much school or work because of how out of control things were getting.

As you can see, your body did not understand the fake hormones, and responded with 80lbs of weight, and probably some other issues. Fat impacts your hormones greatly.

Although your body is not behaving normal, it’s behaving in a common fashion. That is: a state of confusion. Where is the flood of unnatural hormones? If you don’t have major metabolic issues, chances are over time you will normalize.

I personally would work on a clean diet, free of icky foods full of hormones and preservatives, get some exercise going. Work at losing the weight that is negatively impacting your hormones. See if you can normalize over 6 months or so. If not, do not wait any longer to work with a doctor to get your body acting like a human female body is supposed to act, natually.

If you’re TTC, work closely with a doctor and see about getting your hormones tested sooner than later.

An ovulation test predicts ovulation, not your period. I’m confused as to how an ovuation test predicted you would start menstruating.

Also, 3-6 months is the average time period it takes women’s cycles to return to normal after stopping the pill.

This. Your period usually happens a couple of weeks after ovulation. Ovulation and menstruation are two different events.

Medications - all medications - can have wildly differing effects on everyone. You need to see your doctor for a proper medical evaluation.

It’s normal for cycles to be a bit weird after coming off the pill. It will take some time for your body to start regulating on it’s own again.

Talk to your doctor if you’re concerned that it’s taking too long to start cycling again. If you took the pill in order to deal with some irregularity in your cycle before, chances are that you will still have that irregularity now that the pill is no longer masking the symptoms of that. Ask your doctor if there is anything that you can do to deal with the source of that problem.

Also I’m a bit confused about the ovulation test… It said you would likely ovulate in 24-36 hours? Because if that is the case, you wouldn’t expect a period for another two weeks or so after that. It isn’t possible to say exactly when a period will start even if you know when you ovulated; you can just get a general idea of when you might expect it. And it might be more tricky this time because you are just coming off the pill and your body may not be as predictable.

Probably. Ovulation is approximately mid-cycle, not 24-36 hours before menstruation. I say approximately. So, approximately, you should begin menstruating about 2 weeks later.

See your doctor.

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut everyone. Guess I must have been confused with the test. I see my Doctor on the 24th.

I would recommend contacting your local NFP chapter for assistance. Their resource materials specifically speak about how to chart your cycle in the months after stopping your birth control pill.

Essentially, the pill wreaks havoc on your cycle. It can take more than months for it to normalize itself. There is a chapter in the NFP guide on how to observe, read and chart your body signs during the transition.

From ovulation to menses is generally 12 - 14 days. So if an ovulation test on the 3rd says that ovulation was likely in 12 - 36 hours then menses might not begin until the 15th to the 21st (depends on a given woman’s luteal phase - could be 10 days to 16+ but rarely differs more than a day or two for any given woman).

That being said, contraceptives really mess up cycles. As others have said it can be several months before cycles return to anything like normal. Some women ovulate the first month after stopping and then might have 1 or 2 long anovulatory cycles.

The Priest that looked after it moved away.
Contact your diocesan family life office or look on the various websites of the NFP providers. They have contacts and can also point you to alternative teaching options if there is no teacher in your area.

You could also try One More Soul’s website for an NFP instructor in your area. PLus there’s an NFP closed facebook group you could join that has lots of instructors in it that are always so helpful when you just have a quick question. Lots of instructors are willing to teach via skype if there’s no one in your area either. Hope you can find someone who can help you in this journey. 🙂
