My family and I were traveling last weekend and went to Mass at the local Catholic church. During communion, there were thick, brown pieces of the body as well as the white flat wafer style. I have seen the brown pieces before but they have never been served at our family parish. My nine year old daughter had never seen this before and she was served the brown piece while I was served the wafer style. She was a bit upset since she was not used to seeing the body this way and commented that it “tasted funny”. I told her not to say that since it was still consecrated as the body. The purity of children. So, why do some churches serve both styles?

Communion bread can be purchased in many forms and is valid as long as it is made according to Canon Law. I would make sure to speak with the pastor and explain that to switch or mix the elements used in the Mass does cause problems. When it is unexpected. Especially with children. If there will be a difference it should be announced and children should be allowed to “try” an unconsecrated piece before Holy Communion.

We should NEVER make any changes without clearly explaining the changes BEFORE they are made to the faithful.
