The bombardier beetle is amazing. It has two separate chambers within its body that produce two chemicals that when mixed together it forms a 212 degrees F explosion. The beetle can aim the chemical mix spray in a way that it explodes its enemies.

This natural reality reminds me of how we combine faith and reason to help destroy our enemy. Faith in Christ and the reason to follow His teaching handed to us from the Church, destroys the lies of Satan. Similar to the chemicals which could not have the same effect apart from each other, faith and reason do not have the same impact when they are separated.

People grow through changes but the reality of our relationship with Christ is not fully understood without our faith and reason being combined. The bombardier beetle could not possibly exist without the complete set of chambers. Nor could it have changed into being this way. Our relationship to Christ is not a full and mutually self giving relationship without faith combined with reason.

I know it’s not the thrust of your point here, but just in case you’re interested (because it is really interesting) in the bombardier beetles evolutionary path through to its present state there’s a good layman’s explanation of one likely route (along with other interesting info) here:

talkorigins.org/faqs/bombardier.html

It’s a fascinating subject in its own right.

All the best.

The process of how God does things is like physical poetry. For God the end never justifies the means. He uses the means to help describe the meaning of the end.

Through reason we can see how the different features of the end, a creature, that work together for the same function can not be separated. Similarly faith and reason apart from each other do not achieve the same relationship and must work together.
