Am i aloud to read this book and eccept it as a part of my faith, or is this book banned. The bible speaks of this person but doesnt give any story to why he was so good and what he did to ahieve his status. It is said that he was taken up to heaven by god. He must have done something specail. Some web sites say that the book contains writings on a group of entites called watchers, some speculate that they where what we commonly call greys (ufo and aliens) They suposedly tuaght the human race how to make weapons and harness metals and build things. i dont know if this is true, and it doesnt really matter, it just cuaght my intrest. Any light that is shed on this subject will be much appreciative. 🙂

Wow, there are some whacky web sites out there. The book of Enoch has nothing whatsoever to do with aliens and aliens didn’t teach us how to use metal.

Here’s the old Catholic Encyclopedia:

newadvent.org/cathen/01602a.htm

It’s not banned - there isn’t an index of banned books any more I don’t think - and is quoted in Scripture. Some of the Church Fathers thought it should be in the canon. It’s pretty certain Enoch didn’t write it - it is many centuries later.

The Catholic (and Protestant view) is that although it is quoted in Scripture it is not itself inspired. It contains some truth, and some falsehood. If you want to read it, read for interest and don’t base any doctrine on it:

ancienttexts.org/library/enoch/

For more information, this is good (but complex). The Jewish encyclopedia link here is good too:

earlyjewishwritings.com/1enoch.html

Complex - but far more sensible than the Bible-UFO sites.

There are a number of books that were around when the Bible was canonized that were not considered inspired and therefore not part of the Bible. The Book of Enoch was one of them, along with the Gospel of Peter and the Protoevangelium of James and others. We call these books the Apocrypha. The books that the Protestants call the Apocrypha, we call the Deuterocanonicals and they are included in our Catholic Bible. They are not in the Protestant Bible.

Peace,
Linda
