I just started reading the book, The Jesuits by Malachi Martin. Martin is a theologian, expert on the Catholic Church, former Jesuit and professor at the Vatican’s Pontifical Biblical Institute. CREDIBLE??? Sounds like it.
He claims to “… make public the harrowing behind-the-scenes story of men and their motives, and the means they have used behind the camouflage of past Jesuit greatness, to construct the “new” worldwide Society of Jesus”.
Any opinions on this book? I checked it out from our church’s lending library. Appealing to all you readers out there?
Thanks ahead of time for you (name removed by moderator)ut.

One of the best and saddest books I’ve ever read. You should enjoy it.

I have three of Malachi Martin’s books and have read all of them including The Jesuits.

Yes he is as you have said. I have to be rested to read him. The underlying thread he weaves can be lost if you are careless. In my estimation he is a credible writer on Catholic topics.

In my feeble attempt to determine if he has stretched the truth, I am helpless. I find he is credible. He was a professor at the Vatican Pontifical Institute.

I read that book quite awhile ago. It explains alot about how the order drifted away from its roots in papal loyalty. It seemed to make alot of sense to me. Is it 100% accurate? I don’t know. I think I remember Fr Joseph Fessio SJ (Ignatius Press) having some issues with how Martin could have known some of the details he wrote about…almost to the point of being inside the heads of Paul VI and JPII. But other than that, I haven’t heard of anyone refuting anything he said in the book. Also, you might want to read some of the commentaries at amazon:

This is the only book by him I have read (a friend gave it to me). As to its accuracy I cannot say. But I did get the gut feeling that he was busily grinding an ax.
