The Call of St Andrew and St Peter

Hello:

I am trying to understand how the following 2 passages are “related.” Both involve both St Andrew and St Peter but are significantly different.

The first one is from Matt 4:18-19:
18 As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
19 He said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

The second one is from John 1: 35-42:
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples,
36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
37 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
38 Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
39 He said to them,“Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.
40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed).
42 Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; 30 you will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

The 2 passages seem to address the “calling” of St Andrew and St. Peter but are totally different.

Were they a “2-step” calling ? Both events happened but something happened necessitating the second ?

In the account from St. John’s Gospel, the two disciples of John the Baptist were St. John and St. Andrew.

How could both be correct ?

Which happened first ?

When does John’s Gospel say they were called to follow Jesus? It looks like its merely an introduction.

Later on, Jesus passes by the two as they are fishing and then calls them to follow Him.

Yes, that is possible.

My question is really why if St Andrew encountered Christ as John describes it, why would he need to be “called” at the sea of Galilee. St Andrew told Simon (Peter) that they had found the Messiah. Also, St John says that St. Andrew followed him (Jesus). So, which came first Matthew then John ?

May be this is a petty thing, but there must be more to the story.

Yes, that is possible.

If I had to guess, I’d say Andrew and Peter were first introduced to Jesus in John’s Gospel, but they weren’t asked (or compelled) to be His disciples. So they went about their business as successful fisherman.

Then, Jesus traveled to Capernaum and called them to be His Disciples. If one looks at their own life, they may find that they didn’t immediately follow Jesus after first learning about Him.
