The Catholic Church is the only Church that claims to still be the one true Church

I’m not sure the Orthodox are as…um…charitable toward us as we are toward them. We’re willing to acknowledge far more about them than they are about us. :o
Well…yes! There’s certainly nothing wrong with the RCC being charitable-much less being accurate. 🙂

Actually, more than one Church claims to be “the one true church.” The LDS come to mind. I get what you were saying though 👍
Anyone can “claim” it but who can prove it, besides the Catholic Church??? God Bless, Memaw

Whoa…what’s going on with this thread?

The post I replied to disappeared yesterday and now both of my posts are gone?

I think we got some gremlins in here.

Yes, both the post that I responded to and my response that I put some time into are both missing for some reason. Actually, there are a lot of posts that have disappeared for no apparent reason. Apparently, we are writing with invisible ink.

I think maybe someone thought we were being insensitive to our other lung?

I think this was settled when all the bishops agreed to the Formula of Hormisdas in AD 519:
Following, as we have said before, the Apostolic See in all things and proclaiming all its decisions, we endorse and approve all the letters which Pope St Leo wrote concerning the Christian religion. And so I hope I may deserve to be associated with you in the one communion which the Apostolic See proclaims, in which the whole, true, and perfect security of the Christian religion resides.

The Catholic Church doesn’t just claim to be the one true Church. It claims to still be the one true Church. Other churches that claim to be the one true church can not make this claim, meaning they didn’t exist when the early church existed. The Orthodox also make this claim, but this is not disputed by the Catholic Church. Because the Catholic Church sees the Orthodox as an extension of themselves, as its other lung so to speak. Both are the one true Church together, and it is only a temporary schism (not heresy) that gives the illusion that they are two different churches.
Jesus built His Church on Peter and gave Peter the keys to the Kingdom. How can you get in, unless the one you follow unlocks and lets you in?

Yes, well I wasn’t intending to even bring the issue of Peter and the Keys up. Peter and the keys involves an internal issue within the Church. The claim that I am addressing is an external objective claim that the Catholic Church is the historical Church. And, therefore can claim that it is still this Church. While other churches may claim to be the one true church they can only claim this based on non-historical claims like issues of correct doctrine or practice. However, such claims must necessarily assume that the original Church must have fallen away at some point in history, so that their church can take it’s place.

My last two posts got removed, I guess for being off topic, so not sure how else to reply to the OP except, AGREE. 👍

I don’t see how you can separate the two. Jesus said he would build his Church on the rock of Saint Peter and his successors. Only one Church can make that claim.

I am not trying to separate anything but to look first at it from an external objective view. Anyone can argue their interpretation of Mt 16:18-19. However, you can not argue with objective history, at least not coherently. The only reason that the Catholic Church’s interpretation of Mt 16 should be considered is firstly because of it’s historical claim to be the original Church. If it’s not the historical Church then it’s view of Mt 16 is just another possible interpretation.

I agree that objective history leaves no room for any church besides the Roman Catholic Church. The Church of Rome saved the Church from all of the ancient heresies. Which is why the entire Church acknowledged the supremacy and infallibility of the Church of Rome in the Formula of Hormisdas in AD 519.

You must first identify your ‘historical Church’, taking into consideration the culture with which it was established and how it was changed by the cultures that it spread into.

Incidentally, there 23 Sui Juris Churches that make up the Catholic Church and accept the authority of the Chair of Peter. The Catholic Church is not just Rome.

I never said it was just Rome that was the historical Church. If you read my original post I included the Orthodox as well. Both the East and the West. It wasn’t until much later in church history that there was a split between the East and the West.

The Formula of Hormisdas says that the communion of the church consists of those who are in agreement with Rome.
