To all serious Catholic students of Sacred Scripture; I thoroughly recommend the The Catholic Comparative New Testament just published in 2006 by Oxford University Press.

Even though I have a few catholic versions on my bookshelves it is amazingly helpful to have 8 Catholic versions of Scripture (including the DR and the RSVCE) available on every double-page for indepth analysis of specific passages.

This tool has definitely enchanced my bible studies and I will forever have it at my side when I’m reading my primary bible.

Wow! Thanks for posting that. I have not even heard about anything like that before.

What is the Christian Community Bible? I never heard of it.
Here’s some info on it. It’s my understanding that it was developed with primarily “third-world” readers in mind. The commentary leans a little toward more social-justice issues than most commentaries.

Thanks for the tip dalcent! I’m rubbing my hands together in anticipation. This should be a valuable addition to the serious Catholic Bible readers reference library!

Thanks for the link, but somehow I don’t expect that there are too many English-speaking, third world, Catholics.

I have a copy of the Christian Community Bible published in the Philippines where there are millions of English speaking Catholics as there are in Africa and India. The version is dynamic and similar to the Protestant NIV. The translator has made some very good Catholic theological decisions in certain disputed texts: it’s conservative and it’s accurate and it’s definitely sound.

The notes are rather good and similar to Protestant Life Application study bibles with the main emphasis on living a Christ-like life. Some of the notes are geared against the evangelicos active in the developing world but less than there should be.

The Christian Community Bible’s weakness is that like all dynamic Bibles produced by particular denominations it has no real authority for apologetics work because it is interpretative.

The Philippines is the only predominantly Catholic nation in Asia, and a lot of us Filipinos are very proficient in English. The Christian Community Bible (CCB) is actually my favorite version. I also have the New American Bible, King James, Good News Bible, and New International Version, but I can’t find the Ignatius Bible anywhere in our bookstores for some reason. Mary is called “full of grace” in the CCB, not “highly favored” as in other versions of the bible.
