Let’s face it, female altar servers began as a liturgical abuse by U.S. “progressive” bishops and was only approved because JPII knew that selfsame bishops would disobey any strong sanction. Now it is “old custom” and most US catholics do not know any better. Same holds true for the hordes of middle-aged ladies flocking around the altar distributing Holy Communion. Another liturgical abuse that has become accepted, not as an “extraordinary” privelige, but as a “right.” Boys DO see altar service as a “girl thing” and react accordingly. I have nine daughters and none of them ever felt a burning need to become altar servers. Changes are needed and a return to male altar servers is one of them.
There were girls wearing Cassocks and Surplices in the video (notice I am referring to the video) Which leads me to agree with you. SInce in fact the video was a presentation to the typical Mass. The “typical” Mass today is evidence of the inroads progressives have made. The more I read about the Mass and the more I experience…the more I realize how far the liturgy has drifted. I used to catch myself citiquing the Mass I was at. I have since stopped that becuase it is not my job to critique it and it stands in the way of the reason why I am there which is to be present at the sacrifice of Calvary. The video presentation was well done and is a good represenation of the typical Catholic Mass. I think the "community building " aspect of Catholic worship has been carried way way too far. Watching the video has reminded me how our church needs some cage rattling from Arinze and his Boss to get things more God oriented. After watching the video I also realize that the scrapped 1965 missal like would have been the shot in the Arm for our church.
