The CEV vs other bibles

Can anyone tell me about the CEV bible? I have read some non-flattering takes on it, but I was curious if anyone on the board has ever seen and read one.

We are in the process of purchasing books for our CCD program, and was thinking about purchasing some CEV Children’s Bibles for reference and reading. We ended us getting others instead.

I had never heard of these before, so if anyone can comment, please do.

The CEV came out about ten years ago to wide fanfare and media coverage. However, it’s difficult to find nowadays. It was very paraphrased and used a lot of “small words”. It’s fallen from popularity and a few years from now I don’t think it will be in print anymore. Here is an article on the CEV (by a Protestant):

For an easy-reading Catholic Bible I like the New Living translation Catholic Edition best, but it’s only available as a hardback or leather reference Bible.

The bibles in question were not purchased by our program, thank God, and I was right in assuming they were as horrible as the Good News Bible.

I have not seen a full blown CEV yet, either. What they were thinking of purchasing was a Children’s Bible based on the CEV, which would have taken the stories in the CEV bible and placed them as simpler reading stories for the 1st thru 4th graders.

My daughter has the RSV version, and while you can’t quote from it, it does explain the passages in a better light for that age group. To say it is a baby step to understanding the fuller version is a good description.

But I have a hard time passing off a paraphrased version of a paraphrased version of a bible.
