I want to start a new thread for all the children whose lives have been touched by substance abuse, I’m sure that when their parents/loved ones started using/drinking they did not know where it would take them and I’m sure they never wanted to hurt their children but they do. I have watched my daughter’s family be torn apart by this tool of the devil and it has been the children who have suffered the most. The younger children don’t really know what is happening and tend to recover more easily but the older children are not ignorant and the scar seem to run very deep.

So I ask that we pray for all the children whose lives have been touched by this disease.

As a victim of alcohol and substance abuse I think this is a very needed thread. I have come from a home like this and have to deal with the scars it has left. I will offer a prayer for the family’s of such abuse. O Lord, we ask you to visit this house and drive far away the snares of the enemy. May your holy angels dwell here to keep us in peace, and may your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. May the Lord give us a peaceful night and a happy death. Amen May the Lord keep us as the apple of his eye. Amen. May the Lord shelter us under the shadow of his wings. Amen May the almighty and merciful Lord, Father, and Son and Holy Spirit, bless and keep us. Amen

I agree that this is needed. As part of my job, I see the effects of drugs and alcohol on everyday lives. It seems like a constant uphill battle…for every drug dealer that gets put in jail, three more crop up in his/her place. Drugs tear apart families and breed violence and crime. Too often dealers and users alike put the drugs ahead of their families and children. If God could change the life of even one child of the drug culture for the better, I would be happy, and for that I pray!

I just found this forum. My wife and I are devestated right now.
Last year, thanksgiving, we found out that our son has been using drugs since he was 15. He is now 27, has been going to collage and working in Atlanta, and is completely dependent on them to the point of maybe no return and destruction. We found out how bad it was from his girlfriend, who is also addicted. Guess there were times when he nearly died because of the addiction for one reason or another. I immediately made him come home. What a shock it was to us to see him in the condition he was in. He went to an outpatient rehab center in Dec/Jan. I has not worked. My wife and I are paying his outstanding bills, his current doctors treatments (he is on suboxon now). I feel it is time for my wife and I to get help. We are about ready to give up on everything.
We love our son very much as any parent can imagine but we do not know what to do anymore. It is killing us mentally, physically and of course morally. Does anyone reading this have any suggestions as to where WE should go for help. Everything I am reading is directed to the patient but not much for the loved ones trying to help and get through these times. I am sorry for rambling on but thanks for letting me write this.

I’m so sorry you have to go through this with your beloved son! I will keep your family in my prayers.

Wow, thanks for starting this thread. I think when the holidays start to creep up, for some reason I feel more raw to this subject. So thank you for opening up a thread where people can come to pray and talk about it. I do not talk about it because I often feel like friends don’t understand. And the family members that do have their own baggage they are dealing with.
I grew up with an alcoholic mother. I didn’t realize that she was an alcoholic until my mid teens. It’s always the children who suffer the most. We played certain roles in our family. Mine was peacemaker…a trait I fall into so easily when I face a stressful situation. ( Peacemaker meaning that I don’t really express what it is that I feel as long as everyone else is happy and not shouting. )
For the PP that spoke of their son’s addiction. There is Al-Anon…which I found helpful only in the fact that I realized I was not alone. It is for family members and not the substance abuser. And I believe there is Narc-anon which would be the equivalent for those family members dealing with an addict who is on something else other than alcohol. You can find these meetings at your local hospitals, in the local newspaper or on line.
There is also the library to read about what you are up against. We also tried an intervention but it was orchestrated poorly therefore did not get good results. (we were young)
My mother is still an alcoholic who tried to quit drinking and turned to prescription meds…off those(maybe) and back on the bottle. I have watched her relationship with all of her children crumble and her married end after 32 years. She is remarried to another enabler. She lies, she manipulates and lashes out to keep her habit alive. Yet, somewhere hidden deep in her is a lovely woman who for whatever reason she cannot let out. The drinking has gone on so long I think that there is some sort of mental illness along with the addiction. It’s hard to tell which started first.
My prayers consist of endurance and strength for those who are living in an addict’s house or watching it from a distance. I also pray that we can love the sinner but hate the sin. (that’s the hard part) I pray that we do not pass on “sick” behaviors to the next generation such as enabling patterns or addictive personality traits. I pray that we realize this is a disease. I pray that the helpless feeling doesnt turn into a hopeless feeling.
I also include in my prayers that I can set up boundaries without feeling like I am a terrible daughter. That I do have a right to raise my family without all of the drama that addiction includes. That I forgive myself if I need to step away from the chaos that always ensues addiction.
It is the most painful thing I have endured in my life. My heart is with all of those here in this thread and those to still come. You are not alone.
