Church of England baptism services may be re-written to remove some references to Christianity.

I am glad orthodox Anglicans (Episcopals here in the US) reject this nonsense.
What is their logic in this?

Quoted from the article: “Complaints centre on three sections of the baptism service from the Church’s latest prayer book, Common Worship, authorised for use in 1997.
In one, parents, godparents or an adult being baptised are asked to ‘reject the devil and all rebellion against God’ and to renounce ‘the deceit and corruption of evil’. They are asked to ‘submit to Christ as Lord’.”

Dropping the above sections of the service is not a “dumbing down” of the faith, as the traditional clergy quoted in the article states; it is an abandonment of it. Can the Anglican bishops not see whose hand is directing this potential change?

Rejecting 'Christ as Lord’ puts them outside of Christianity.
Are they that desparate for members?

Since there are no examples of the proposed changes, you should be careful with statements like that.

I think that the proposed changes sound like nonsense at best, but the headline doesn’t seem to match the content of the article–not for the first time. It’s not clear that the point is “taking out references to Christianity.” We’ll have to see. But the whole mentality behind this sort of thing is, IMHO, completely woolly headed even from a practical perspective. Making Christianity sound more “secular” doesn’t even bring members in–let alone the damage it does to the integrity of Christian tradition.

This is another consequence of the rejection of Christ and Christ’s Church. By breaking off from the Catholic Church, any Protestant denomination is slowly losing whatever grounding in Christianity it had. But the decline is steepest in the Anglican/Episcopal areas due to the political and matrimonial reasons.

At some point, the Anglican/Episcopal churches won’t be anymore Christian than Judaism or Islam, if they keep going down this route.

Dumbing down beliefs isn’t going to win any converts.

Years ago, when I was an evangelical I heard a Catholic teacher on television make the statement that Protestantism, by it’s very nature, leads to theological liberalism. At the time I thought the statement offensive, but now on this side of the Tiber I can see his point.
Protestantism, does indeed lead logically to theologial liberalism and relativity.
I base this conclusion on the shaky concept of ‘scripture alone’. Without anything to anchor to, they drift.
This can be seen very clearly by just observing the path various denominations have taken from thier roots. Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran. The mainline roots of those denominations have all gone liberal. There are sub-groups that have hung on to thier roots, which must be commended. But those sub-groups become smaller and smaller as the decades roll on.
This is directly tied to the Protestant notion of private judgment. The Catholic Church overrides private judgment, and considers the Church’s magisterium to be the final arbiter/defender of the deposit of Faith, left by the Apostles.
Liberal Catholic leaders themselves are overruled by these doctrines.
The difference however is that the “Deposit of Faith” in the Catholic Church is considered unchangeable and is therefore ultimately immune to liberal/secular tendencies.

This is good news! To Catholics that is. Because I bet this will convince more Anglicans to come home.

Okay Catholics, keep those arms wide open! :hug3:
