I’ve heard people point to a tragedy in their friend’s life as the driving force in getting that person to return to the Church, or as the reason that their friend “found God.”
I’m curious what forum members think about this notion. Do you think that most people “find God” or return to the Church because they are grief-stricken or confused about a tragic event in their life? Do most of us turn to religion to help us get through grief or hard times in our life?
I know that when I go through tough times, I think about making a bigger commitment to the Church and I tend to lean on God more at those moments. As a 30-year fallen away Catholic, I recently made the decision to return to the Church, and that decision was not based on any grief or tragedy. However, I feel guilty about the times when I am more eager to return because I am going through a tough time. This behavior is like temporarily using the Church and/or God as medication to numb a particular pain.
I know that many people go to church because they are true believers and they love the Lord. I guess that the people who label religious people as “just working through grief” are not true believers.
Any thoughts?
