Oh the insanity! It is amazing what we have to deal with isnt it? You just have to be content with the fact YOU knew better and that you did your best.

Even the most basic logic often is too deep for most people to understand because they are not in the right mindset. But then again…are your SURE nobody else heard you during that meeting? It is very likely that your apologetics stand was a powerful testimony to others in the room who sat silent but were in fact hearing something they never heard before.

**
I think they heard him because they were nodding their head in agreement, body language usually speaks the truth.
So he is right to assume. I think he is stuck woth someone who wants to be a new leader and it seems like the others have discussed this with each other before hand for some to be in agreement and your dad’s friend may be going along with pressure from the priest. **

Its tough, you can only do so much. And most importantly you cant let it get to you, it is not a failure on your part.
**
I agree don’t let it get you down but I would have another discussion or if you want out let the study be taken over at anothers house, then you will have the choice to attend or not. **

Even our resident Maronite priest has become Melkite!!

I think we are a dying breed 😃
Wow! I’ve never heard of a Maronite priest becoming Melkite. Heck, it’s took a lot of work just to get the local Maronites to continue working with our mission when it had to continue as a Melkite mission after the Maronite priest left and there was no replacement.

Very interesting!

Ask the person about contradicting interpretations by two people trying to follow the Spirit. Obviously one or both is disobeying Him and deceiving himself. How can we figure out which is the true interpretation? How can we test whether it truly is the Spirit rather than a spirit of darkness? How can we make sure we are not deceiving ourselves–did God provide an objective standard by which to test all spirits? Yes, the teaching throughout the centuries of the successors of the Apostles 🙂

2 Peter 3:14-16…I threw in 17-18 for clarity of your position. This disputes what your friend says about the bible. Divorce is clearly not allowed the way he states it. He is not divinely guided by the Holy Spirit in such matters. In fact, he’s starting another ecclesial community with these ideas of his rooted in pride. Coming from a once bible only believing Christian your friend needs to be smacked over the head with this scripture. It’s not the only one.

14
Therefore, beloved, since you await these things, be eager to be found without spot or blemish before him, at peace.
15
And consider the patience of our Lord as salvation, as our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, also wrote to you,
16
speaking of these things 12 as he does in all his letters. In them there are some things hard to understand that the ignorant and unstable distort to their own destruction, just as they do the other scriptures.
17
Therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, be on your guard not to be led into the error of the unprincipled and to fall from your own stability.
18
But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory now and to the day of eternity. (Amen.)

(Mat 10:20) For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. If the Spirit is the one speaking and leading the Church, the Church cannot err on matters of faith and morals.

(Mat 18:17-18) If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector. Amen, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. the Church is the final authority on questions of the faith. This demands infallibility when teaching the faith. She must be prevented from teaching error in order to lead her members to the fullness of salvation.

Peace,

Ryan 🙂

Thanks Ryan…I thought of the second passage but the first well…I can’t think of everything. GOOD JOB!

Maybe these will help scripturecatholic.com/the_church.html#the_church-IV

Luke 10:16 - “Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” Jesus is very clear that the bishops of the Church speak with Christ’s infallible authority.

Matt. 28:19-20 - Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age." Jesus’ presence in the Church assures infallible teaching on faith and morals. With Jesus present, we can never be deceived.

Glad to see a Catholic reading that thing we ex-solo scriptura Christians call the Bible. Keep it up, you might end up being a Fr. Mitch Pacwa, SJ, yet or a Scott Hahn. I love it when Catholic read their …no better yet…I love it when a Catholic actually has a bible and esepcially reads it. I’ve started trying to read those Gideon Bibles at a very early age…but really started reading a Good News New Testament at the age of 14…

However I was convinced that it was a poor translation and bought and read the older version of the NAB from the 70’s at 16 regularly everyday…read through in one year reading all references and their references at least one step away from where I was. By the time I graduated I read New Testament about 3 times and Old Testament once. During military I read through about 3 or 4 more times…memorizing and recalling passages from memory… but beware of the evil one that tells you “I know my bible and you can’t tell me I don’t”. Seventeen years later I rediscovered the Catholic Church AGAIN? Yes…a bit like Scott Hahn’s story. I was planning on becoming a Protestant Minister. I glad I didn’t get far and was determined to have something to fall back on…

I’m playing catch up and concentrating on apologetics. That’s really why I’m bother with the board. My military instinct likes to poke fun a little too much here and there…sometimes I don’t know when I’m serious either.😃

So now I love reading the Ancient Church Fathers and the saints when I get a chance. My DW loves the saints writings. I love to listen to conversion stories on CD’s and the Journey Home…it’s my vice.😉

domestic church calling me.
