Hey y’all!
I have been noticing a lot lately that many people in the Dominican media are very disapproving of the Cardinal from the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo, Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, often not on the Church herself in general, but from a show called “Jarabe de Zapete”, which is a talk show on politics and social issues in the Dominican Republic, Zapete, the talk show host, said that it’s the Church heirarchy that’s gone bad, and especially the cardinal from that archdiocese, because he is the most influential of that nation, because of comments he made condemning the laity from voting or supporting leaders who oppose the Church. He said that “the people should think with their minds about this” and that “the Dominican Republic is a nation, not a Church (I am assuming he means a nation were Church and state are integrated)” and that the Cardinal should keep quiet about this because the country is a country of many “churches” and religions. He criticized him greatly for allegedly saying that anyone supporting those politicians would be excommunicated. However, he did recognize the source of good the Church has in reaching out for the poor, but I doubt he actually means faithful priests who serve the poor because it’s not a very rare occurance to find a priest from the D.R. that openly criticizes a lot of the traditions and teachings of the Church and goes around turning the faith into a social justice service. The D.R. is facing a lot of problems in that respect, a lot of Dominicans are either secularizing or becoming Protestant, specifically evangelical or pentecostal. I know this for a fact because my family is from the D.R. and often much of my family is going through this. It’s very difficult to find someone who views the Catholic faith in it’s most organic form favorably. Why instead of bashing out completely on the problems we face in the Church we pray for the troubled heirarchy (boy, there are many, even Our Lady reminded us that there would be bishops, priests, and even cardinals that betray the faith for reasons other than the flock). Sure, I applaud his investigation and noticing that things are not so bright in the Church, but his comments can reinforce a bigger distrust and perhaps even hatred for the Catholic faith even though he did say he does not hate the Church. I do find it courageous for someone in the media to speak of some truth in these times where many seem to ignore or misconceive. We have to diagnose and find a cure. Ave maria!!!
