  1. How long is the mandatory Communion fast for Eastern Catholics? Does it depend on country? If yes does anybody know what are the rules for Romania?
  2. If an Eastern Catholic were to receive Communion in a Roman Catholic parish which fast should he follow, the EC or the RC one?
  3. Since in theory the Orthodox can receive Communion from a Catholic church which Communion fast rules do they have to follow?
Cheers.

I’m only asking because I was planning to visit an EC parish this afternoon.

  1. 1 hour. The Eastern Code of Canon Law doesn’t specify, it simply says each Eastern Church defines its own fasting requirement. As far as I know, almost all of the EC Churches have adopted the Roman canonical discipline of a minimum 1 hour fast.
  2. They’re both the same essentially. But, preferably, if receiving Communion in an Eastern Rite Parish, you will follow the ancient Eastern discipline of fasting from midnight the night before - if the Liturgy begins before, say, noon. If it begins later or in the evening, preferably at least 3 hours.
  3. Orthodox are urged to follow their own obligations, so preferably they’d fast from midnight the night before.

A Catholic follows the sacramental discipline in the canon law for their Catholic sui iuris church, and each may have particular canons in addition to the CCEO. What I have seen for Ukrainian and Byzantine (USA) are a minimum of one hour before reception of the Eucharist, however that is a minimum and the traditional is from the time that we retire, or midnight, whichever comes first.
