Hi, I am going to be accepted into the Catholic Church on Saturday at the Easter Vigil so everything is completely new to me (I know no other Catholics) so I am just after a bit of info.

I’ve got a list of things happening in my parish this week, and I’m not sure what they are

On Holy thursday there is: Chrism mass
Watching until Night Prayer

On Good Friday there is: Solemn Liturgy and Veneration
The Compassion of Mary

I think I’m ok with the rest of the weeks preceedings, there just seems to be so much to learn, which is exciting but also a little overwhelming

Thank you
Mel x

A thousand welcomes! I am a convert from the C f E as well, and will always be grateful for the grounding in the Christian faith I received there.

I have to say, I have never heard of ‘The compassion of Mary’. It will mean ‘suffering with’, I’d imagine. Maybe a type of Stations of the Cross, focussing on how it would have been for Mary? Is your parish run by a religious order particularly devoted to Mary?

The Chrism Mass is the Mass presided by the Bishop where the priests renew their vows.
They also receive the “new” holy oils for their ministry for the coming year. Your priest will use this new oil during your ceremony at the Easter Vigil! This Mass takes place at the Bishop’s Cathedral.

There is a Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday at your personal parish. There will be the readings of the institution of the Eucharist, there will be the washing of the feet (by the priest with 12 people, just as Jesus did with his 12 disciples) and at the conclusion of this Mass, there will be transference to the Altar of repose ( a separate room, chapel, etc. symbolizing the Garden of Gethsemane) where the hosts will be reposed and people will stay and “keep watch”, make a hour or longer of prayer as Jesus asked His disciples to that night before He died. IT’s a beautiful liturgy. Go! 😉

Good Friday in the evening, there is Liturgy (not Mass…remember Jesus is gone at this point, having endured His passion…the tabernacle doors are open and the tabernacle is empty) with a reading of the Passion,. Then we have many intercessions for the people of the world, and non-believers. Then, Veneration of the Cross. People come forward (like in a communion line and kiss the wood of the cross, or make some form of veneration & reverence, bowing, etc. Then there is the Our Father and the priest or the Deacon will go to where the hosts have been reposed, and bring them into the church for distribution of Holy Communion. Then, we leave in silence.
During the day on Good Friday there is most likely Stations of the Cross at 3 PM, you should check your Sunday bulletin.

How exciting for you! These liturgies are so incredibly beautiful. I hope you can make it to one or all of them.
Welcome to the church. What a blessing to us! I hope the experience brings you great joy, now, and always.
Peace!

Thank you 🙂

I’m going to try and get to as much as I can

Don’t let it be overwhelming. You have a life time to learn and you will still only scratch the surface of what there is to learn. There is so much wonder and beauty to be found whether you are just beginning this journey or if you have traveled it for years.

Melissab1, did you find out what the service called ‘The compassion of Mary’ was? I have never come across it before, and am intrigued.
