Fr Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI, was consecrated as bishop by The Most Reverend Josef Stangl, on the 28th of May, 1977. He would be created cardinal by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI on the 27th of June, 1977. He served as Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977-1982.

Bishop Stangl says “Are you resolved to be faithful in your obedience to the successor of the apostle Peter?”

Fr Ratzinger replies: “I am”.

Is it not wonderful that after 43 years, that moment when he answered ‘I am’ to the bishop’s question is still true, as he is most obedient to his successor, Supreme Pontiff Francis.

God Bless You, Pope Benedict!
