The Coronation?

Can anyone tell me about the Coronation? When was it? Shortly after Mary was assumed into Heaven? What part, if any, did Jesus take in the Coronation? What happened exactly? What is the meaning of it? How did it affect Mary?

Mary is recognized by the Church as “Queen of Heaven and Earth.” She was not always Queen - she became Queen at some point in time (which many theologians would claim happened at the Incarnation, which actually took place on earth, not in heaven).

The Church has never taught that there was actually a crowning ceremony either in heaven or on earth. She became Queen (which is what a coronation does) without needing the fanfare of a ceremony.

Artists, of course, often depict Jesus placing a crown on Mary’s head; this is purely artistic license.

All Marian doctrines must be understood by way of analogy due to her relationship with Christ Jesus.

Christ Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Mary is his mother. The mother of a prince is a queen. Therefore, Mary is the Queen of Peace.

Christ Jesus is the Church. Mary is his mother. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of the Church.

Christ Jesus is God. Mary is his mother. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God.

Et cetera.

Every single Marian doctrine affirms something about Christ Jesus that is central to the faith.

Another important point is that Mary is the example to us as a Christian. It is in Mary that we find the promises of Christ fulfilled first. In the naming of Mary as Queen of Heaven and earth it is in fact a reference to the book of Revelations that states that we wil all be given crowns in heaven. This is through the baptisimal kingship that we all receive - Mary is just the first.

The first thing wise King Solomon did after ascending to the throne of his father, David, and his mother came to meet him was to stand up and pay her homage and have a throne for her set up at his right hand where she reigned with him as the Queen-mother of his kingdom. 1 Kings 2:19. I cannot imagine that Jesus would have done any differently when his mother, Mary, came into his presence in heaven.

As said above, Mary’s consent at the Annunciation made her the person through whom all grace came. That is when she became Queen of Heaven.

It is this mystery that we contemplate in the Rosary, not some ceremony that would really have taken place. When she was assumed into heaven, Mary was mystically crowned. having reached the fullness of her destiny.

Mary was crowned when she accepted Jesus. Remember that the Angel Gabriel greeted her with the word “Hail.” The word “Hail” is used to greet royalty. The reason why the Angel used the word “Hail” before she even accepted, was because of course her decision was already known by God. God knows the future. It’s a mystery how he can know our future when we have free will.

But I thought that the mysteries of the rosary were in chronological order (all the others are). Why wouldn’t we pray the Coronation straight after the Annunciation if that’s the way it happened?

That’s right. A Prince becomes King the instant that the old King dies, but he is crowned some time later, usually after at least a period of mourning.
Similarly Mary became Queen of Heaven with the words “let it be done to me according to His will”, but she didn’t enter into the full glory of that status until God had restored the Kingdom for her.
