"The Day Christ Died" (1980)

Apparently, this is a very little-known TV movie from the 1980s. It pretty much covers the same territory as The Passion of the Christ, in that focuses on the last two days on Jesus’ earthly life. But unlike that film, it does go deeper into the (possible) motivations of the characters involved, especially Caiaphas and Pilate. It’s also unlike The Passion in that it doesn’t focus on Jesus only: in fact, the movie ends just as Jesus is being crucified. In that respect, I think it could complement The Passion.

Now admittedly the film is not perfect and does have a few hiccups (the script is a bit weak in places, for one), but to be honest I’m kind of liking its portrayal of Jesus: he’s human but without compromising his divinity, something some portrayals fall prey into. Admittedly, it’s a breath of fresh air, especially if you’re like me who had seen too many Jesus films with their overly-divine/angsty/goofy Christs. Plus, Chris Sarandon’s curly-haired, bushy-bearded Jesus is perhaps one of the more authentic-looking film messiahs. 😃

It may have been produced by 20th Century Fox but depending on it’s copyright status it may have fallen into public domain.

The film was based on the book of the same name by Jim Bishop. He had his name removed from the film because he didn’t like the script.

Each chapter in the book covers one hour in the final hours of Christ’s life.

It’s worth reading.
