This is what has permeated our Church…heterodoxy. Lets follow the logic. If I can better understand myself or someone else by using, say, a horoscope or Ouija board, then it’s okay? If I give the Ouija board some Christian terms or pray before I use it, that makes it legitimate? Don’t forget the ROOTS of the Enneagram. It came form an occult master, just like the Ouija Board. Read PASCENDI…all of it. The warnings are clear. The teaching is binding on the faithful and, for good measure, came from a saint. Church teaching has never changed on this so, what’s with the hesitation?

Pardon me if I am a tad confused… I myself did not mention Ouijia board and I do not stray from church teachings. I never mentioned horoscopes or Ouijia boards in my response. I simply stated that when I went to a workshop years ago I was not led away from the church nor was the church attacked in any way. [by those who participated] To elaborate we did not worship a sun god play tarot cards attack the church use horoscopes or Ouija boards… I am not sure I could make my point more clear and do not appreciate my quote taken out of context… Please before you attack someone on the boards do not do so without knowing their background, I believe I was quite clear that there could indeed be those who may misuse it… however my point had been that it was a useful tool that some may use to see their strengths and weaknesses. I do not normally use tags but do consider myself to be fully in communion with Holy Mother Church and am considered quite conservative by most … tho perhaps not by some on these forums.

Sorry if you think this is an attack. Far from it. But when you say “those who may misuse it” and “it was a useful tool”, you’re acknowledging a “legitimate” use in the Church that has NEVER been allowed. Catholic spirituality is not the accretion of the “new” and the “novel”. Rather, to better understand yourself you look to a good spiritual director, steeped in this beautiful faith, as a guide. You don’t look to the occult (which is the origin of the Enneagram) to try and find the “good” it may seem to provide. The end does not justify the means.

The Enneagram used in churches also cleverly and deceitfully couches itself in Christian terms. Yet the terms mean different things, as another poster has indicated. That, my friend, is Satan’s work, not the Church’s.

Compare and contrast the Enneagram to the Magisterium and Her infallible teaching. The Church has spoken clearly on this and other false spiritualities. It’s time to obey Her teaching.

As usual, I have no advice, but it genuinely makes me cry to think of such things happening. It’s almost too much to bear. :bighanky: I guess we can pray, though.

Jesus said scandals in the Church will come. All we can do is remain steadfast in the faith and speak the truth clearly and unambiguously, without compromise. The Truth always wins out. What’s not known is how many victims it will take with it. Please continue praying.

I honor you for your fortitude and wisdom in bringing the enneagram workshop issue to your pastor. You give me courage to address this in my diocese.

I studied the enneagram process during my Masters work in Counseling. It is promoted as a “self-knowledge tool.” If used as such it is much like taking a Meiers-Briggs Personality Inventory.

Unfortunately, the people who need the most self-knowledge are often vulnerable and can misinterpret the tool as something more powerful that somehow “sees” their true nature in a somewhat “magical-thinking” way. They give up their internal power (will) to an unseen external power. These people would benefit from having a therapist guide them to see that these tools are just ways of organizing was they already know about themselves. For most, the enneagram could be somewhat innocuous.

That being said, Catholics do not need to use “tools” to gain self-knowledge. We have a direct connection with the Creator who made us and knows us better than we know ourselves. The Holy Spirit speaks to the Christian heart all that the Christian needs to know. Catholics are hungering for direction on how to develop their relationship with the Triune God. Through the Eucharist, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, frequent Confession, regular praying of the Scriptures, Spiritual Direction, etc Catholics are led to a deeper understanding of who God is and who we are.

This is what we need from our parishes. We have a rich heritage of diverse spirituality within the Church. I strongly pray that our parishes and dioceses will feed the flock with these.
