This event described in Genesis is a very poignant moment, and fills me with a sense of awe as does the account of Abraham building an altar to sacrifice Isaac.

Reading this part of Genesis with “the eyes of faith” I wonder what the scene was like.

(I wonder if this moment has ever been depicted in art, for example.)

There would have been Adam and Eve and Cain, surrounding the bloodied body of Abel, probably on the ground. They might have been just staring at Abel, in puzzlement and disbelief, fading eventually to resignation. They would have experienced, in all likelihood, a terrible grief over the loss of a child and brother. Eventually they may have buried the remains as a vivid recollection of their own origin in the earth.

Scripture and the Church commemorate Abel as both a priest and as a sacrificial victim himself, pointing spiritually to Jesus, Himself.

I’ve seen this scene depicted many times in Art, although never with the quite the tableaux you described. 😉

I seem to recall a famous painting regarding this event.

I’m often struck at the words, The LORD then said: "What have you done! Listen: your brother’s blood cries out to me from the soil!
