What were the historical, cultural, and theological significance of Christ’s prediction of the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70AD?
What an interesting question! Unfortunately, I cannot offer an answer without considerable research (I’ll have a look through my library tonight) but could it be something to do with the Exile? I mean the Exile happened to teach the Jews to stop putting God “in a box” as it were, and to demonstrate that God was a God of people, not places, a numens personale not a numens locale. Could one say that after Jesus had made the personal nature of God explicit to the Jews and they had rejected it outright, God removed the temple and the sacrificial system? What were the historical, cultural, and theological significance of Christ’s prediction of the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70AD?
Historical: It came true. The Temple was destroyed. What were the historical, cultural, and theological significance of Christ’s prediction of the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70AD?
Exactly. With the dawning of the New Covenant, God clears away the central symbol of the Old Covenant, the Temple. The Jews described it as a model of the universe (Is 6:1-7; Job 38:4-6; Amos 9:6).
This prefigures the destruction of the universe at the final judgment and God making a new heaven and earth.
I happened to get that “Temple at the Center of Time” book (by David Flynn) at the recommendation of a friend, and because it got thrown in when I was buying some other books; and I have to say, Wow! I’m still trying to wrap my head around some of the stuff he’s writing about. I’ve never been one much into numerology, but he does make strong cases for his theories.Flash forward to now

There is a problem with rebuilding in many Jewish eyes and that is animal sacrifice. The jury is still out for the time being, but tensions are gaining height.
