I’m curious- I have seen posts here and on other forums comparing the two-but are there any knowledgeable enough here to give me a rundown on the difference between the two that is fair to both?
I’ve seen posts here before with differences but can’t find them now.

This Lutheran pastor explains the different between the two. Hope this helps!

Thanks! Something besides COVID and politics. I was baptized and confirmed LCMS but am now WELS as it is the only close confessional Lutheran church in my area.

I swing between being Catholic and going to a WELS church.

Very welcome.

Generally speaking, the LCMS and WELS are both conservative confessional Lutheran bodies. The big difference is that to its benefit or detriment, depending on your point of view, the LCMS has more latitude in its liturgical practices and views of unionism. WELS is more conservative liturgically and is very wary of allowing its pastors to do things such as participate in corporate prayer with other ecclesiastical bodies. I don’t have any experience with WELS congregations directly, so I can’t really comment any further.

Obviously I don’t agree with WELS, but I do admire them — they’re the “real deal” and they don’t compromise to suit anybody. “They are what they are”, take it or leave it. That’s something to be respected.
