Jesus tells us that it is the Scribes and Pharisees who sit in Moses seat. Jesus indicates that Jewish Sanhedrin have similiar power to Apostolic Successors power to “hold sins bound”. Jesus says, “
answerable to the Sanhedrin, and if he holds him in contempt he risks the fires of Gehenna.” Jesus makes it quite clear that Jewish leaders are not infallible.
NAB MATTHEW 23:1
Then Jesus told the crowds and his diciples: “The scribes and the Pharisees have succeeded Moses as teachers; therefore, do everything and observe everything they tell you. But do not follow their example.”
NAB MATTHEW 5:22
What I say to you is: everyone who grows angry with his brother shall be liable to judgement; any man who uses abusive language toward his brother shall be** answerable to the Sanhedrin,** and if he holds him in contempt he risks the fires of Gehenna.
NAB MARK 7:9
He went on to say:
"You have made a fine art of setting aside God’s commandment in the interests of keeping your traditions! For example, Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and in another place,
‘Whoever curses father or mother shall be put to death.’ Yet you declare, If a person says to his father or mother, Any support you might have had from me is korban’ (that is, dedicated to God), you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother.
That is the way you nullify God’s word in favor of the traditions you have handed on."
NAB MATTHEW 5:20
I tell you, unless your holiness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees you shall not enter the kingdom of God."
NAB MATTHEW 26:59
The chief priests, with the whole Sanhedrin,
were busy trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death.
