The Duty to a Minimal life of the Mind

Every Christian has a duty to pursue a minimal life of the mind. What does this mean. It means simply you cannot please God and may not be able to save your soul just by continuing to live without learning all you can about your Faith, firstly; and how to defend that Faith. secondly. For Catholics, as an absolute bare minimum, that means read, study, and meditate on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and/or similar Catechisms.

Read and Study and meditate on the Scriptures

It should mean studying the works of the great Catholic thinkers of the past and even the present. The Fathers, St. Augustine, St. Thomas. Of course you can’t study them all but pick out one and start there.

Read the lives of the saints. At least one new one each year.

Keep up with Catholic and world news - EWTN, New Advent.org are good sources

Sounds like a lot doesn’t it. Well, spend more time on the more important. And remember, turn off the T.V. and you will have a lot more time. But if you are spending less than seven hours a week improving your Catholic/Christian mind you aren’t doing you job at all.

This day and age requires special effort!!!

I don’t know how necessary it is for salvation to be particularly learned…but I feel similarly on a personal level. I am always reading and learning about great Catholic thinkers and Saints. It’s important, indeed. But let us be real here…kindness, generosity, humility…these are the things that will help us to salvation.

Of course but we have an intellectual obligation, if for no other reason than we are God’s image. And of course many are so burdened that they may not be able to do much more than to read the Catechism and a few verses from the Bible each day. Surely they can do that?
