The eldest overlooked in the OT. What is the relevance of this in light of the NT?

I have to say that understanding typology (basically the parallels between the Old Testament & the New Testament) has revolutionized my Bible study. Maybe those of you who are more intellectual than me can explain typology further.

Throughout the Bible the first born was overlooked for a younger child to receive blessings or gain the inheritance. Abel, Jacob, David, and Joseph are the more common of these. Now I know this aspect of their lives can not be a typology of Jesus. However, since it occurs frequently in the Old Testament what are the parallels or connections with the New Testament?

I note that the Jews are often referred to as our elder brothers in Faith.

This would seem to agree with the parable of the Prodigal Son, where we are the younger brother who returns.
