After Mass this morning I was reading the bulletin on the way home (in the passenger seat of course and not while driving), and turned to see that the USCCB is endorsing this act. It goes on to read that my parish is urging parishioners to call or write their Congressman in support of H.R.763 because it has bi-partisan support.

The legislation, according to the bulletin, seeks to reduce national carbon pollution emissions by over 90% by 2050. It goes on to read that global warming is a “social issue” and that this legislation is a “cost-effective” way to reduce carbon emissions, and is “revenue-neutral”.

How does it do this? Well, redistribution of wealth of course. It aims to tax and fee the snot out of carbon producers and give that money to the poor. However, they call it a “dividend” so it seems so wonderful! It also allures people into supporting it by stating (lying) it will increase jobs and grow GDP.

I want to vomit. Not only will killing the fossil fuel industry through centralized planning (we know how well that’s worked so far) not only destroy hundreds of thousands of jobs, it will actually hurt the poor because transporting food, supplies, people and water to places across the globe will be so exorbitantly high due to the increased “fees”, but redistribution of wealth is wrong. Finally, have the USCCB decided to listen to anyone on the other side of the debate, and not the generally 99.9% of the scientists who are athiests who believe in global warming, errr, climate change? In 30-40 years, we have heard “global cooling” go to “global warming” go to “climate change”. I’m not apt to believe a bunch of scientists who can’t make up their minds and lie about the data and suppress those who put forward strong counter data. Nor I am going to support the USCCB on this issue.

They should stay out of politics when they don’t know what they are talking about. This is economics and politics and has nothing to do with “social” issues.

The very rich do not want to choke to death. China has been burning a lot of coal. The United States is second. Right now, in the United States, the IRS is offering a tax credit if you own a business related to certain renewable technology. That credit is high right now, it will go down a bit in 2020 and be only 10% in 2021. Investors are jumping in. The changeover will largely be done by 2021.

I am not rich. I am not poor. I do not want to choke to death or drink dirty water either, but the US government is going about this the wrong way. This legislation is redistribution of wealth, forcibly taken from “greedy and evil” corporations and given to the poor.

And what do you suggest be done about it? We still live in Medieval times. The robes and crowns are gone but the wealthy and the landowners are still in charge. The peasants are useful up to a point. There is a certain street in Detroit that looks like it was carpet bombed and left alone. Less than 100 feet later, I am entering another city with flowers and wooden street signs and very expensive homes. I can still see Detroit in my rear-view mirror.

I just looked this up,

It seems their goal is to make carbon fuels so expensive that it forces a shift to alternative energy.

The tax will be collected and redistributed to everyone, rich and poor in an equal amount.

This just serves to move energy-intensive industries offshore, where they have more lax pollution standards. We lose living wage jobs and the overall environment is worse off.

The politicians will raise taxes then express shock when prices rise.

I believe that most politicians have a disease that doesn’t allow them to understand the law of unintended consequences…
