The Esoteric Kingdom of God - Luke 17:21

It was a custom among learnt Jews of the First Century, especially ambulant Rabbis and Teachers, to gather around them disciples in the mystical number of twelve, and to teach them Torah, as they would prepare new Teachers and Rabbis to proceed with the custom

There were many of such groups, but there was something special about the one of Jesus, that the main theme of his message was to teach about the Kingdom of God, which he would sometimes explain the esoteric character of it, as of being within ourselves.

The Kingdom of God, according to Jesus, was taught only to select number, and not intended to the general body of disciples, designed for and understood by the initiated. However, the secret, as is always expected to, would leak out into the larger populace, and even get into the ears of the Romans.

Juxtaposed to this Jewish custom of the First Century, there was to the Romans, a policy throughout the Provinces of the Empire, to arrest the head of any subversive group, and crucify him, so that the disciples dispersed. That’s exactly what happened in the case of Jesus, that when he was arrested, his disciples deserted him and fled, according to Mark 14:50.

Many were crucified in the same manner, scourged in the same manner, and suffered the same amount of torture. The only difference with Jesus is that Pilate was somehow aware of his special message about the Kingdom of God.

Of course, the Romans did not bother verifying what kind of Kingdom Jesus was talking about. For them, even the buzz about another kingdom which was not Roman, was enough to take one to the cross. That’s why it didn’t help Jesus to explain that the Kingdom he was talking about was not of this world. (John 18:36) The joke stuck to him, and he was crucified for being misunderstood as King of the Jews. Hence the plate on the top of his cross imposed by Pilate as a deterrant to any other candidate with the same aspirations.

Therefore, Jesus was crucified on mistaken charges. His Kingdom of God was esoteric. An inner state of mind. The Kingdom within.

You really don’t know Judaism, do you? Fine, let me explain it to you, as offensive as that might sound.

In Jesus’ time, there were two main ideas about the Lordship of God. One of these main ideas was that God reigned through Israel the whole world; in Israel, He reigned in a social sense, and He was expected to extend the physical Kingdom throughout the world by messanic conquest of Israel’s enemies. The other of the main ideas was that God reigned in the hearts of the righteous, especially in the Jews, and He was expected to extend the spiritual Kingdom throughout the world by spread of the knowledge of God, which was believed to come about through messanic conquest of Israel’s enemies (just as the knowledge of God spread throughout the Promised Land when the Israelites conquered their enemies).

Jesus taught the spiritual Kingdom of God. He taught His Apostles this because they were expected to found a New Israel, of which the shedding of His Blood would make a New Covenant, since He is the Lamb of God. Interestingly enough, when Jesus went before Pilate, Pilate asked, “Are You a king?” because in the Roman Empire any reign or kingship opposed the Emperor, whereby it would be considered treason. Jesus said He was a King, but His Kingdom was not worldly. Pilate understood Him quite clearly, and he declared Jesus innocent of any crimes.

But Pontius Pilate was a very corrupt judge. He despised the Jews, so much so that he was willing to mock their belief in a messiah by declaring Jesus the Messiah when he had His charge carved: “King of the Jews”. Basically, he was declaring that Jesus was being crucified for being the Messiah. Yet that wasn’t Pilate’s real rash judgment. His real rash judgment was when he decided to have Jesus crucified despite having committing no crimes, just so he could save his own skin. The Jews were threatening to cause him to lose his position as Friend of Caeser, and he, out of fear, allowed them to get what they wanted (but he pulled the tables on them when he had “King of the Jews” as Jesus’ death sentence).

Could you clarify something? As I understand it the word malkut can be translated as kingdom, but does it also mean kingship?

Do you think Jesus meant sharing in the sovereignty of God, since he said that his followers would perform miracles?

best regards,

Vincent

The word has three meanings: kingdom, reign, and kingship.

Jesus’ Kingdom is in the soul. He reigns in the righteous heart. We share in His Kingship by living in holiness and overcoming temptations.

Sorry, but this is complete ignorance of what Judaism was in the First Century. There was never in the First Century or whenever a kind of Judaism based on shedding of a man’s blood to make a covenant. And much less of a Jew claiming to be the Lamb of God. Now, this that Pilate declared Jesus innocent of any crimes is a complete disregard for Reality. As I can see you have never read Josephus about Pilate. NEVER in Pilate’s life, he would declare a Jew innocent if he had a chance to crucify one. This is pure Church conspiracy to try to transfer blame on the death of Jesus from the Romans to the Jews. Even after Pope John 23rd asked the Jews to forgive Christianity for 2,000 years of this false accusation, you still perpetuate the myth.

This is what I call a blatant lie in the NT. There is nothing more important to a Jew than God’s Law. If Jesus came to confirm that Law down to the letter as we have in Matthew 5:19, it doesn’t make sense at all that the Jews would demand of foreigners to crucify him. And who would make Pilate scary of anything, Jews?
Have mercy on yourself!

How could Jesus be a model to overcome temptations if he could not sin? I doesn’t make sense to me.

**Yes, Malkut can also mean Kingship.

The Sovereignty of God, according to my thread, is esoteric. That’s the government of our own passions and desires. To be in control of our own emotions. And that’s the teaching Jesus meant to share with his disciples. Nothing like a place called Kingdom of God, which the Romans understood as such and took Jesus to the cross for insurrection. Now, with regards to the performance of miracles, speaking as a Jew, we still do, but by controlling the natural laws in and out of man.**

Your saying that it is “pure Church conspiracy” is a myth, Ben! Even if you sincerely believe it!
As for knowledge of Judaism, have you ever learned anything about development of doctrine in Judaism over the centuries, including the centuries “before Common Era”?
I would be interested in learning about that.

**Judaism is a dynamic religion all right, but the Biblical part of Judaism has never changed. The evolution occurs in the commentary and explanations
of what is Biblical to be adaptable according to the times. And these commentaries and explanations started with the codification of the oral laws about 200 BCE. **

Well if malkut also means reign then when he said the kingdom of God is within you, he meant that the kingship of God reigns within you. As to control of emotions, perhaps he said something on that, but his big message was that one must be born of the spirit in order to perceive the spiritual nature of human experience.

He was quite infatic that most people are deaf dumb and blind to the true nature of reality. Entering the kingdom means to perceive the world though new eyes, spiritual vision…

Thank you; for you have agreed with every line of my post.

From one Biblical book to another, you may also find some more precise definition of a tenet, Ben. Moses spoke of the consequences of sin on yourself and your children until the 4th generation, while Ezechiel states that you are the only one to have to answer for your own sin. Not a change, maybe, but more precision in the definition of responsibility of sin.

More precision in the definition is apt to change the mentality for the better.

No commentaries and explanations before that? I thought Ezra the priest was there way before that. When the people was gathered for worship, the Scriptures were read. Was there not also some explanation being given of them afterwards, according to the text?

Ezra was not a commentator, but a Scribe, a Scribe and Writer. BTW, he was the most famous Scribe in the History of Israel.

Yes, and as such, very quaqlified to explain the Word of God in an assembly gathered to worship God back from the exile to Babylon, as in the book of Ezra and that of Nehemiah.
Can’t you leaf them to view the passage? They read it to us sometimes at Mass…
