Hello,

After receiving the Eucharist yesterday not immediatly afterwards but sometime had passed, I felt it sour in my stomach. Why? This has never happened to me before. I am trying to discern what God is trying to say to me.There is no physical explanation for this.

One thing that distinguished yesterday from all the days that I previously received the Eucharist is that I had never hungered for it as much as I did yesterday. I had received very difficutl news and I just wanted to be with God. I longed to receive the Eucharist.

Before I felt it sour in my stomach, I spoke with my parish priests. During our conversation he said: When you receive the Eucharist you really receive. I said: Yes.

I wonder if I had that experience because I was not worthy to receive or what? I know that when Jeremiah and John ate a scroll it was sour in their stomach. But, I do not understand.

Has this ever happened to anyone? Is there an explanation available?

Peace,

Abba

None of us is ever “worthy” to receive the Eucharist. But God in His mercy freely gives Himself to us anyway.

Don’t look for hidden symbolism in what was probably just a normal physiological function.

The way to know whether you should be receiving the Eucharist or not is to do a good examination of conscience. If you are aware of any serious sin that you have not brought to confession and received absolution, you should not receive. Otherwise, any Catholic in the state of grace is free to receive without scruples.

PhilotheaZ, thank you for your response.

I am not one to look for symbolisms. I can say that it was a big day for me and God. I just wonder if there is any spiritual explanation for such an experience and if this has ever happened to anyone before.

Yes. We are not worthy to receive him, thank you for correcting me. I wonder if maybe in addition of not being worthy, if I had that experience because of something particular that may have made me unworthy. I do not have any big sins that I have not confessed.

What could possibly be the meaning. I just wonder.

Peace,

Abba

probably has nothing whatever to do with the sacrament, simply natural effect of fasting followed by a small amount of food, or a simple digestive upset

would not be too quick to look for a supernatural meaning in natural events.

I’m with puzzleannie. It crossed my mind that the emotion involved in your having received difficult news may have set up your stomach to sour in response to any food, and so to the accident of the bread and wine - but not to the Real Presence!

The same thing has happened to me on a couple of occasions. I blame it on my stomach, not my soul.

HTH,
Ruthie

Well said.

The information received prior to reception is far more likely the cause of the “sour stomach” than anything else - just keep that in mind :).

More than likely, thats all it was for you…

Do you have problems digesting other things with wheat gluten? If so, you may want to look into a medical cause for your problems before anything else.

Dear Abba,

May God be with you!

It could be as simple as stress. When I’m under stress my stomach can get sour.

God bless you!

sour stomach can be caused by celiac disease, a non-life threatening intolerance of gluten. Perhaps you should go that avenue first.

I have celiac. And though many would disagree with me, I do partake of the host.

The reasoning behind it is Church teaching. Although still in the appearance of bread, after the words of consecration, the host is completely, totally, and utterly changed to the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus. (My wording, but I believe that they agree with the Catechism.) The wheat, including the offending gluten, is gone.

I realize that that this may surprise people. But I feel that to do otherwise would be tantamount to a denial of Church teaching. And the teaching doesn’t allow any leeway in this.

It all comes down to what you believe, Either the Eucharist is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ or it isn’t. I choose to believe that it is.

Do you ever feel the effects that would normally follow eating wheat?

The problem with your thoughts is even the Church says the ‘accidents’ are still present so, yes, the host is Jesus, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity but the body can still perceive it as wheat, gluten and all this is the Accidents. Jesus is also present Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Precious Blood so you can ask to receive only in that form.

Now, having said that, I am an elimination diet wheat free person. I have not been officially diagnosed but my research leads me to believe that I do indeed have celiac and yet I still receive Jesus in the Host - problems and symptoms actually occur more when I go to Mass more than twice in a week!

Okay, back to the OP, chances are it was stress that caused the symptoms ;).

Brenda,

While I am not really knowledgeable concerning “accidents”, I can tell you what happens with me. For some reason or other, the the host does not seem to affect me. I know different people are affected ways to disease, and I cannot find a satisfactory explanation for it, though I had big trouble with any form of wheat since I was weaned, being a “banana baby” myself. I am sorry you are having trouble with the host.

I am also happy to meet someone else who shares this thing with me, and fine something in common with people here, albeit an autoimmune disease. I hope all goes well with you, and when you get diagnosed, you’d let me know 🙂 .
